I actually think Team Angel looks kind of pretty. I might have liked it I would only hope the entire plot didn't involve them just saving random people from disaster. I would like an actual villain group to fight maybe a group of Devils since they mentioned doing something against the Devil. Of course that would make it similar to Wedding Peach as Wedding Peach had a team of four Angels fighting against Devils.

Well, those disasters could be engineered by the Devils, as they're supposed to be deadly evil. lol

I love Super Human Samuari CyberSquad, grew up on that along side power rangers a few years before I discovered the Dic Dub of SM
If you like that show, the anime SSSS Gridman should be up your ally since it’s a sequel to the show.

Anyways on topic, I’m sorta okay with the cartoon/live action cat of Luna. I only saw the Toon Makers video after Codename Sailor Earth on her site Moon Sisters, made an entire page bashing the Toon Makers concept of Sailor Moon.

I’m not saying it couldn’t work. It just when you get a series geared towards girls, it’s may do poorly cause we’re under the idea that girls can’t play with action figures. Consumerism is a Wicked Lady.

- Only a music video (which is what we've all seen) and a proof of concept were produced. A POC isn't even a pilot technically speaking; it was just a 17 minute episode that demonstrated what a live action/animated hybrid American remake of Sailor Moon would look like.

- It'll only be released if Toei still has it in their archives and sees fit to release it. I doubt there's much if any interest in it among Japanese fans, so it would be up to Viz to pester Toei about it. And given how Viz seems determined to eradicate all traces of the original dub, I don't see them lifting a finger to release the Toon Maker POC.

- The Moon Cycle is a toy that came out in the nineties. It's not a new toy. Not even remotely.

So, I was watching the infamous Toon Makers music video (which S T I L L has somehow not been leaked/released. Like, how is that even possible? Where is the guy who showed it at that convention??? But I digress) and a few things caught my attention... (I'll be referring to the girls with their DiC dub names just for the sake of convenience)

The girls seem to not only all attend the same school, but the same class(es?) as well. The uniforms suggest a private school and the scenes of the girls dancing in what looks like a dorm room with bunk beds further suggests it's a boarding school, which is an interesting idea. Given that the concept for this show didn't seem to include reincarnation, having the girls all live at a boarding school would sidestep the issue of their being teenagers living on Earth without homes/families. (I guess we can assume Luna used magic trickery to get them enrolled?) There's also that scene showing "Serena" reading a book on astronomy while she, "Lita," "Amy," and "Mina(?)" arm wrestle, which perhaps indicates this version of Sailor Moon wouldn't have been such an airhead.

Is Luna sitting next to Queen Serenity here? I'm not sure who else that could be. If so, then it would appear Queen Serenity would have worn a purple(? Hard to tell given the picture quality) dress with a black strip down the middle with what looks like moons printed on it?

So, there are two short scenes in the music video where we see the girls dancing in the aforementioned dorm room. The first seemed to feature "Serena," "Lita," and another girl with short hair who may or may not be "Raye." Then there's this one, which seems to have 11 people in it (it's hard to be completely sure though, due to the potato picture quality): "Serena" on the top bunk, and then two Amys, two Minas, two Litas, two Rayes, and two of those other short-haired girls. So... Were there two casts? Why? Was one cast just stunt doubles/stand-ins? Would that really be necessary for a short proof-of-concept video? Even if so, why feature both casts, even in just a brief shot? Why is there no second Serena? And who are those other girls?

Also... Since we know he was in the show, why wasn't "Prince Darian" included in this music video?

ETA: In the voiceover script, Queen Serenity sends Sailor Moon et al through a vortex to Earth... Does that mean that in this show, the Sailors etc were from another dimension/parallel universe? Or was it a vortex through time?

I guess they wanted to make the show feel more like Power Rangers (thus the live action parts), but doing the entire show in live action would have been too expensive, so doing the action parts as animation would have been more practical? And, if my hunch is right about the girls being to sent to an Earth in a parallel dimension/universe, that would make the live action/animation hybrid approach make more sense: the girls come from an animated dimension (which they return to when duty calls), but now live "ordinary lives" in our live action dimension.

The whole thing just seems so….out of touch and ill advised to me. It would have obviously been cheaper to license the footage and dub over it. I know at the time in 1994/1995 anime was bigger in the adult market than the kid market but Japanese kids cartoons being imported and dubbed into English dates back to the 1960s. But Renaissance Atlanic really thought they needed their own Americanized animation to sell the product?

It is a curiosity l guess, but I’m glad Kodansha gave DiC the license.

So since Toonmakers Saban Moon was all about being diverse, do you think they would have kept the LGBTQ characters and themes unlike Optimum? Or was gay rights still not considered a politically correct topic back then?

I imagine the thinking went something like this:

"Boy, that "Sailor Moon" show sure is making a ton of money over in Japan and Europe. Let's bring it to America!"
"But American girls want to watch shows about girls who look like they do."
"And who wear American fashion."
"And read American magazines, etc."
"We'd better make our own Sailor Moon show featuring a diverse group of American girls."
"Let's make it live action like Power Rangers - all the better for product placement."
"But let's do the action sequences in animation to save on costs."

It's honestly not a terrible concept, but at the end of the day, it wasn't a necessary approach since the dubbed anime was really popular. Still, I wish this concept would be revived in some capacity, either as a comic book or a movie, one day.

It's interesting that there're actually some tokusatsu-anime hybrid shows produced in Japan back then, but the live-action parts were for the action, i.e. tokusatsu, scenes, whereas the anime parts for the rest - the exact opposite of Saban Moon. lol
