While reading through my French translation of the Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon manga, I've run across a passage that doesn't quite jibe with Alex Glover's translation. While I'm fully aware of the latter's constant disclaimers about accuracy, both translations have been messed up on occasion and, at this point, I'm not sure what to believe and was hoping someone on the board who speaks Japanese and has Volume 13 of the original manga could help me out with this problem.

On Page 145 of the manga (in the middle of Exam Battle 1: Ami-chan's First Love), the evil spirit Bon'nonne introduces herself. Now, what I'd like to know are two things: first, what the hell is a "genius loci" or whatever she calls herself, and, two, what exactly is her connection to the Ichiban Preparatory School and how long has the site been her haunting ground? My French translation says she helped found the school over a century earlier but Glover's translation claims that she's been hanging around there for tens of hundreds of years. Which is it?

Any help would be appreciated.

As soon as I saw this I flashed back to last semester biology, a loci is the position in a chromosome of a particular gene or allele. Go me and remembering bio!! But it's probably no help anyways.

On page 123 of PGSM Short Stories 1 it says "hyaku suu juu nen" which is "100 number ten years" which would make Alex Glover's "tens of hundreds of years" right, I guess.

In my Cantonese version, she introduced herself as an "earth spirit". That would make sense given the Japanese do believe in spirits residing in nature and occasionally haunt places. She was said to be around the site for a "long" time. No mention of her helping to found the school. The "10s of 100 hundred yrs" probably mean a long time. I'd think my Cantonese version seem to agree with Alex Glover's translation.

"Genius loci" means "(guardian) spirit of the place".

That's right! :D

(Guardian) Spirits of the Place: Geniī Locī.
(Guardian) Spirits of the Places: Geniī Locōrum.

Thanks to everyone who answered! :)

Hmm...since that went so well, here are a couple more trouble spots that I need some help with due to the French translations' tendency to mess up numbers and/or change dates around:

1. Codename: Sailor V Book 1, Page 46: Does the teacher say that Minako's late for the thirteenth time this month?

2. Codename: Sailor V Book 1, Page 141: What year is the Dark Princess' tour supposedly taking place? 1992?

3. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Volume 5, Act 18: What month and year does the calendar show? August 1993?

4. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Volume 11, Page 91: Again, what month and year does the calendar show? December 1994?

1. Yes, except I'm not sure if that guy's her teacher. It says goshujin which means husband, or master or something so I'm not really sure... :?

2. I don't see a year anywhere. It does say 002 on the poster but I thought it just meant it was the second tour or something.

3. Yes, August 1993. The year is hard to make out in the new version, though, but I'm pretty sure it's the same.

4. Yes, and it's a Thursday. I wonder if it really was a Thursday on that date.

Thanks Mars Peach! You've been a big help! :)

And to answer your question, just checked an online weekday calculator. December 22, 1994 was indeed a Thursday. My stupid French translation kept the exact date but said it was a Tuesday, which was why I was so confused. On top of it, they also stated that the Dark Princess was on her 1992 Tour, which is apparently completely inaccurate as well. >_<;

More Questions...

More questions for the more learned than I...

Anyone know what Hikaru's (Minako's best friend from the Codename: Sailor V full name is? I've heard it's "Sorano", but can't find any specific references to verify that assertion.
¨
And speaking of Sorano (Chibi Usa's bespectacled classmate who bears a disturbing resemblance to Umino and Amano), does he have a first name?

Yet More Questions...

Since you guys're so helpful, here're a couple more:

1. Do any of the installments of "Chibi Usa's Picture Diary" have official names of any sort?

2. In the "Chibi Usa's Picture Diary" in Volume 15, does the Juuban Dentist Office have an exact year of founding? Glover says nothing, but my French translation uses 1629, which is unusually specific for something that might be dead wrong.

3. In the "Chibi Usa's Picture Diary" in Volume 17, how old does Chibi Usa say she is?

As always, all help is appreciated.

1. They do in the new manga in the 1st short stories volume. The spacing is probably off in my romanizations. My translations are a little rough too.
Chibi Usa Enitsuki:
Dai1wa Tenkousei ni Goyoujin! (1st Story- Beware of the exchange student!)
Dai2wa Tanabata ni Goyoujin! (2nd Story- Beware of the Festival of the Weaver (July 7))
Dai3wa Mushiba ni Goyoujin! (3rd Story- Beware of Cavities!)
And this was originally a picture diary but is now: Bishoujo Senshi SE-RA- MU-N Bangaihen HIMITSU no HANMA- PURAISU Dou (Pretty Soldier/Guardian Sailor Moon Extra Story- Secret Hammer Price Hall)

2. It says Kan'ei Roku Nen kara. From the Lenient Eternal 6 year? I have no idea when that is. It seems to be referring to a specific time, but I don't know enough to say when.

Thanks!

Thanks for the confirmations, Mars Peach. :)

Since we are on the subject, does anyone here have access to any other works by Naoko Takeuchi? I am looking for anyone who can help me with details from The Cherry Project and Maria. As always, thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

It just might. Any chance you'd be willing to look throuhg them for tidbits of useful information for me or possibly make some scans? :)

I haven't really had time to flick through them yet... When I do, what should I watch out for and scan? Stuff somehow linked to Sailormoon?
