In the original, there was a language barrier between the girls (Japanese) and Edwards and his other guests (English).

In the CWi dub, the language barrier was between English (the girls) and French (Edward & co).

In the Viz re-dub, there is no language barrier, just the girls being unable to understand/use proper/formal English, which...just makes them seem really stupid. It's very awkward and bizarre.

Honestly, I feel like it's up there with Neo Queen Serenity being so dumb she had to write a letter with "symbols".

^Eh I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the symbol thing was worse because it was offensive to another culture's language and makes Serena come off as illiterate. It was also easily avoidable "The penmanship is so sloppy!" "Look at all those spelling errors!" but no.

This change is more lame and uninspired than anything. A byproduct of following something so closely without accounting for situations like this.

I'm still gonna wait and see what exactly it is that they do to the episode. Right now, it just seems like they dropped the language barrier in favor of an etiquette barrier, but there could be something more to it than what we can tell from just that video clip. Like, if there's no language barrier, Usagi's first meeting Edwards at Mamoru's door wouldn't make any sense if they both end up speaking English. They have to have some kind of dialogue confusion between the two to make that scene work. Let's just see how this will play out before claiming the sky is falling or something.

After all, Usagi still gets drunk off her marbles, rambles about the Theory of Relativity being like a flan, and yells over-friendly greetings at the foreigners like she's supposed to. All we need to complete the scene is a "YEAH, NICE TO MEET YOU! CREAM STEW!" (though, Viz subbed this as "Yeah, nice to meat stew… cream stew… ", so we'll have to see how they dub it).

Extending this question out to everyone since the DVD and Blu-ray comes out this Tuesday. Are there any specific clips from Episodes 90-108 you would like to see? I'm getting my copy immediately from Walmart, and I'm willing to take requests. I am not uploading full episodes and the clips need to be less than three minutes long. It will take time to encode and upload each individual clip, so patience is key. Also, if my Walmart doesn't get it in or sells out (They ran out of Hunter x Hunter fast the day it released a few weeks ago), I can't do anything about it.

Usagi kept on saying "Welcome to Japan! Sushi! I love America! Hamburgers!" So I think we're just meant to believe she's speaking Japanese the whole time and not English. And that the girls actually just don't know how to speak English.

Not a request for specific clips, but when you watch the episodes, could you let us know how the re-dub handled the other girls' homophobic/heterosexist reaction to thinking Makoto had a crush on Haruka?

Certainly bad penmanship or poor spelling would have been better adaptations, but the "symbols" thing isn't exactly offensive. "Characters" would have been a less unfortunate word choice, but technically all writing is composed of symbols. Also, in the original, Usagi only wrote in hiragana because she didn't know kanji. For a native Japanese speaker, not knowing kanji is a kind of illiteracy. If anything, the "symbols" line makes it sound like the people of Crystal Tokyo are using some new language/writing system because future!

From the Hulu thread:

Episode 107

When Luna speaks her line of “What’re you planning to do?” to Usagi, the animation is unfinished as her mouth does not move when she speaks this line. I at first thought this might have been a case of the video freezing on Hulu for a second, but adjusting the video quality didn’t help like it usually does, and comparison the scene with the Pioneer DVD version shows that her mouth is indeed supposed to move, so Viz’s version uses a flawed video master for this scene.

There were more instances of frozen video in this season but this was the first to show a character's mouth not moving when they should and there was more of this in SuperS & Stars.

If you still have your Pioneer DVDs with you, could you post a comparison in case Viz didn't fix this? This was the main issue I was worried about when they made those tweets back in May because it got real bad in the later seasons and we saw what happened with episode 80, even after they fixed that for Hulu.

They really should just change the language . i know there trying to keep it faithful. But the joke is gone , even faithful dubs change the language to get the joke.

One that comes to mind is that pillow fight scene from 105.

Anyone get their pre-orders in the mail yet? I always got mine early back when I ordered the first season sets.

As for the mouth not moving, it's definitely not a "flawed video master" LOL that is 100% Viz's doing. It's most definitely the same thing that's causing those frozen grain frames and missing eyes and mouths. It seems that they are still using the same filter based on the dub clips they showed, I'm just hoping they changed the sensitivity threshold so it detects mouth movements better.

I know. That real reason was explained to me in my Observations thread way back when I first wrote that.

They got the set late on Friday and had already shipped them out yesterday.

Not the first time this had happened with Viz stuff recently because with the first Hunter x Hunter '11 set, they didn't get those until the week it officially came out and didn't ship my copy until that Wednesday.

Couldn't sleep last night so I called my nearby Walmart two hours ago and they had their DVDs stocked early for once! I wasn't expecting them to be on the shelf for another three hours. I do have to say though, the moment I walked in, there was a huge gathering of Walmart workers at the entrance, I guess having some sort of group meeting with their manager. I felt all their eyes on me as I made my way through to the DVD section.

I'm starting process on the requested clips right away so stay tuned for a lot of clips today!

Had a similar experience once when I got to my nearby Wal-Mart except the employees were close to the entrance in the Deli area. It probably helped that I wasn't going that direction & had my earphones on the entire time so I didn't pay that much attention.
