Do they at least change the tone in their voices? I mean, Seiya's Japanese actress did a very good job of making Star Fighter a lot more feminine than Seiya.

it should be noted that there is a difference between sounding like men and sounding like boys. The Three Lights' voice actresses in both the Japanese and English versions were never supposed to sound like the former.

They don’t sound like the latter either.

This is true, and I did quite enjoy the voice change watching Star Fighter interacting with Sailor Moon in the Japanese version. I’ll have to watch out for it in the English version.

I’m a Stephanie Sheh fan, think she’s great as Usagi. Never had a problem with the way she shouts out the attacks but oh my god the way she shouts Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss... it sounds horrible! It doesn’t even sound like her version of Usagi... it’s not good at all.

I think she sounded worse in episode 199 where Sailor Moon yelled "Silver Moon Crystal Power" in her fight with Galaxia.

EDIT:

Maybe they feel that using "Master" in a genderless fashion is "progressive" or something. *shrug*

Also...I watched the part where Usagi pours her heart out to Seiya for finally breaking down seeing the rose he threw...are....the voice directors NOT good in this dub!? Because Sheh hardly...had raw emotion (least I thought) in this scene and this scene in the original was raw and POWERFUL!..and it came off very very VERY disappointing...-shrugs-

"Master" is used more commonly for men in English? I think "master" sounds cool, It would be neat to hear "Mestra Galaxia" in a Brazilian Portuguese redub.
And why would "Lady" be considered sexist?

Hmmm, I'm surprised they went with Master Galaxia. Mistress I can understand not using, but Madame seems like the better choice here. Maybe it's from the fandub clips that utilized it, I dunno. Master seems more of a term for men.

"Master" is almost always used in reference to men and boys. It's very rarely used in reference to women, so it's definitely an odd choice when "Madame" would have worked better. Even "King Galaxia" could have worked since there's more of an historical precedent for referring to female rulers as "king." Viz continues to make the weirdest choices, news at eleven.

They probably wanted to show the hierarchy of their relationship, to show that Galaxia owned them. You don’t get the same connotation with “Madame” (also, it’s used generally for older women). They probably could’ve used Mistress, though that word has a bunch of other connotations attached to it, which I’m assuming Viz didn’t want.
In contemporary English, master can be used for either male or female. ie. master chef, chess master, master of the arts, etc. You really don’t see “mistress” used in any way other than with some kind of sexual connotation these days.

It's common to say that a woman is a "master" at something - "She's a master chef," "She's a master at manipulation," etc - (and you would never say a woman was a "mistress chef" because that's not how that word works) - but it's extremely rare that you would address a woman as "Master." The Viz dub has had its share of grammatical troubles in the past and I feel like this is another instance of that rather than their intentionally trying to be gender neutral or progressive or whatever. I also doubt they avoided using "mistress" or "madame" due to their potential sexual connotations given that Viz rates the show as 14+, has no problem with having the characters swear, and they didn't exactly rename "Mistress 9," now did they?

Not a surprise, voice direction has been awful the entire dub sadly.

Y'all know what's really ironic about this whole "Master Galaxia" thing? Viz had already used "Miss Galaxia" in their subtitled version on Hulu as a pretty consistent (if not quite accurate) translation of "Galaxia-sama".

Or at least, that's what it was subbed as for both Sailor Iron Mouse and Sailor Tin Nyanko whenever they spoke "Galaxia-sama", as both Aluminum Seiren and Lead Crow more often than not would have their uses of "Galaxia-sama" subbed instead as the simpler and even less accurate "Galaxia" with no title at all.

 The difference is astounding. It's really embarrassing and shameful when a bunch of fans with no experience, budget or proper equipment deliver a better product than a supposedly professional company. The Viz dub of the song had no intensity or emotion to it and it sounded like it was sung by only one person. It was awful.

Exactly. It's ridiculous. Master Galaxia sounds so clunky and unnatural. There's nothing wrong with Mistress Galaxia. Plenty of words have different meanings depending on context. They should have just gone with Lady Galaxia. A royal title communicates perfectly Galaxia's status and power over her underlings.
