So as an old fart that's well-versed with Sailor Moon, I've somehow never gotten around to watching Stars after they deal with Nehelenia. The early licensing issues made it so I was only able to see a couple random episodes with no subs a long, long time ago, and after they got licensed I just didn't pursue it.

I'm finally watching them now. Anyone want to hear my thoughts as I go through? I'm a few in now, and it's been interesting to see how Stars fares against the legendary S season, since they're often compared, among other things.

Ep 173: Despite everything, I continue to be surprised that they sent Mamoru away in this season/arc. I guess Moon and the others were entirely too certain in their PRINCESSU's power. Which I would buy, if, y'know, not for Moon needing her butt saved in nearly every episode of the entire series.

The Starlights intro song is always so neat. I don't blame Moon for not recognizing them, considering the gender swap. It actually makes more sense for their civilian identities to be more secretive considering they're not part of the Sailor Team. I wouldn't expect the crew to be able to recognize them as senshi right away (though that doesn't explain every other senshi revealed 'til now... oh well.)

The "IDK LOL" from Usagi at the end about what she saw to the rest of her team is annoying. Seems like a way of stretching out the myStErY for a little longer, but really, how hard is it to say that a group of rogue people calling themselves senshi showed up?

Ep 174: Such deja vu with Seiya. Definitely giving off the same cranky energy from Usagi that she had towards Mamo at first. Though it's a little goofier here since she's older now.

Uh, who let the steroid-infused 30 year old into the high school to play football?

Iron Mouse is so SMOL. I don't know about her personality yet, but she's cute.

Ugh. Honey, Maker, get your pH checked... The goop attack is one thing, but the fact that it burns...

That's all I got for now. I'll do more if anyone cares.

Episode 175: Becoming an idol, Minako's ambition -

There's so much that confuses me this season and I don't think there will be an explanation. How long have the Starlights been on earth? How did they become so absurdly popular and so quickly? If I didn't know better I'd suspect them of being bad guys, as usually when someone shows up and takes over with this much influence this quickly, they're an enemy. Like all the "DARK" stores popping up and immediately being the BEST THING EVER according to the townsfolk.

Anyway....

So Minako just shoves her way in and the guys just... Accept it? Even the irritable Yaten? Don't they have an agent or something who should be shoving this random teen fangirl out?

Ok, I can kind of accept them allowing Minako in, since she's actually doing some work, but the fact that no one cares about Usagi tagging along is... Dumb. Would've been a nice time to revisit the disguise wand.

Ah, real pros. They chug the swill they're advertising to folks no matter how bad it is. Unlike the umeboshi in that one episode of Top Model... I think some of you will recognize that reference...

I'm intrigued by the Galaxia HQ. Did they just hijack an entire broadcast station? Jadeite would be proud.

Minako: "We've gone beyond studio rental time!"
Photographer: "Wait! I'm not good at my job!"
Minako: "Not my problem!"
Photographer: "This isn't school! You don't just quit at the bell!
Minako: "We're renting a studio! That's exactly how it works!"

Yeah, I don't like her.

Ok, Iron Mouse effs up, animation director randomly decides to upskirt Minako, Starlights show up, and Moon does her thing. Cool. I'm sure this won't become a formula.

6.5/10

Episode 176: Fighter's Secret Identity: Shocking Super Transformation

How much time and money was spent on this pointless fanservicey dance scene with the idols? In any case, it hasn't aged well.

The loser bond between Usagi and Minako is really cute. It's pretty bad that even Jups thinks that they might get held back, though... XD

I'm really not used to seeing Rei be such an over the top fangirl. It's amusing how she keeps shoving herself into their school. The ohime language is freaking me out, though.

The argument between the coach and Fighter is so grating. I don't want to listen to either of them B* and moan.

I think... nunneries must work differently in Japan.

If only Iron Mouse's accuracy extracting star seeds wasn't so good. She might actually get what she's looking for.

Basic version or not, I wasn't expecting to see a Starlight transformation this soon. Verra nice. I'm sure it sounds ancient to some folks, but their transformation theme still slaps, what can I say?

I gotta say, I always liked the clips of Fighter's voice performances I'd heard before, and Niiyama really did bring it. (RIP.) I love the rough edge to her voice when she hits "Make UP!". The Starlights in this version are rather shouty, but I like her voice. (Cosmos' version isn't doing it for me. Sounds too much like Armin.)

Ok, ok, I get Fighter deciding to attack and kill the Phage and feeling tortured over it. UNTIL Sailor Moon shows up. The ranting fit she has at her about "not understanding what we've suffered" boo-hoo nonsense and then proceeding to try and kill her again is just bizarre, considering she already knows that Moon can and has healed every Phage they've encountered over the last few episodes. But hey, at least Mars gets to be spicy for a moment.

6/10.

You leave my cow out of this
Hmmph. YOUR cow deserves it!
I'll have you know MY COW was all about Sailor MOOn and made sure I watched the Stars arc, even though I had to go with a B-MOOt-leg (this was in 2004). We even watched all 3 MOOvies.

By the way, I'm glad that you got the MOOlan reference.

edit: Ugh, can't believe I Moospelled the year MOO4.

-Episode 177, A Star of Dreams and Wishes: Taiki's Transformation-

This was a rough one to watch. I remember that the Starlights have always been kind of divisive in the fandom, at least in the anime, but Taiki's quite insufferable in this episode. Kind of amusing to have someone who endlessly obsesses over their magical princessu and changes physical from from male to female is so determined to squash anyone's dreams regarding mysticism. I don't think they picked up on the element of Japanese culture of keeping your mouth shut to avoid confrontation... I guess that forehead is more of a bullhead.

My BIGGEST problem with this episode, though, is this nonsense:

Maker: Your Dreams and Wonder are no match for rain.
Mercury: *looks over and sees the rain pouring down* *GASSSP*
Maker: The weather reports say there's a 100% chance of rain tomorrow, too.
So you're telling me that MERCURY, the senshi of WATER, who's also a frigging genius and constantly informs herself on everything she can get her hands on, didn't know there was going to be rain in the forecast, or that it was currently pouring right next to her beyond a plane of glass? I get that this plot thread was just to emphasize faith over reason, but it's sloppy writing and just annoys me at Maker's high-and-mighty attitude about something Mercury should have been well aware of.

I don't know if it was a reduced budget, time, or simply due to the character design Moon had this season, but it really feels like they didn't know what to do with her in the stock footage. She just stands around for most of it - even in her transformation. But hey, at least there's waaay more frames on the spinning toy Eternal Tiare than that dreaded Moon Stick 'twirl' in Crystal. :P

Episode score: 5/10

-Episode 178: Luna's Discovery: The Real Face of Yaten-

Luna, you absolute hussy. Always running around on Artemis and worrying Usagi again like in the S movie... These days that cat would deserve a GPS collar for this nonsense!

The random love letter confession scene was certainly... interesting. Were they trying to lay down the foundations for people thinking Fighter had a chance? Or just following the long-running tradition of Usagi being interested in girls? Who knows...

Seeing Moon running around trying to protect girls' hearts from Yaten's callousness is strangely befitting her role as the Guardian of Love and Justice... Venus is too busy with her drooling to do her sworn duty, I guess. :umno:

Noriko (the idol/phage of the episode) is insufferable.

Whoa! I was not expecting an accusation of Yaten being gay, let alone Luna lashing out like that about it. Was "homo" a derogatory expression in Japan at the time? I haven't heard that word used in Japanese to refer to gay people before, but I'm no expert.

The 'relationship' between Iron Mouse and the senshi is great. XD Her attempts to simply avoid her problems is amusing... but they seriously lobbed a plotted plant at her?! Who was it? Jupiter, with her wood association? XD Mouse trying to talk through Sailor Moon and then bailing by the time she's done with her speech... She's seriously got more sense than most of the baddies we've seen over the course of the series, lol.

Ok, I was expecting this episode to increase my dislike of Healer, similar to the way Fighter and Maker's highlight episodes annoyed me at their behavior... But she's alright. An attitude, to be sure, but her protective attitude towards Luna is touching.

Episode score: 7/10.

LOL! Can't say I blame you.

-Episode 179 - Friend or Foe? Star Lights and the Sailor Guardians -

Return of the lesbian lovebirds! Hurray!

It's sad seeing Usagi struggle with the lack of correspondence from Chiba. It's an anime and all, but it's easy to forget that she's still in her early teens and has had him by her side in one way or another since she was 14.

Are all Sailor Guardians of their PRINCESSUS as bitchy as these three? (Well, mostly two at this point). Such a contrast from the inners were searching for the Moon Princess early on in the series. Anyone and everyone was worthy of a "Maybe it's her!" whereas Maker and Healer bristle at mere comparisons, let alone misidentifications. Yeesh.

"She has no idea what we've been through to get here!" Yeah, we get it Maker, you've got a victim complex. YOU don't know what SHE'S been through to get here either! These people should be celebrating that the random humans that are getting turned into Phages can be saved, and instead they're mostly just focusing on their own losses and patting themselves on the back for having the #1 Sob Story. Ugh.

I've seen so many people talk about how the personalities/character of the Starlights is non-existent in the manga, and I'd partially agree with that, but I'll gladly accept a paper-thin character over all this bitching and moaning and holier-than-thou's-princess-attitude. Uranus and Neptune were smug back in the day and weren't afraid to show the other senshi what they were dealing with, but they mostly expressed self-hatred at what they'd had to do in the name of their mission, instead of being whiney babies about it. Cope.

Taiki, and Taiki's forehead, are some of the worst characters from this season.
Yes... I'm starting to see that...

As cute as it is, I wonder why they used such a silly method of communication with Iron Mouse in this. It was 1996 - cell phones had been around in Japan (albeit in an antiquated form) since the 1980s!

I just noticed that Iron Mouse says "Bye-chuu!" as a pun. Sadly, there's no trace of it in the subs.

I know the anime plot differs from the manga, but why on earth is Galaxia just letting her minion freely roam and wander around to find star seeds? This isn't energy hunting in the original series or pure heart searching in S - the only people with true star seeds are senshi/senshi-analogous (Mamoru) - so what the hell? Does she want to see her minions flounder and fail?

Ok, Maker is a jerk, but it was pretty funny how she just swoops in, lands her attack, and literally walks off without a word. She's so done with this. XD

I can't get over how Haruka and Michiru (especially in this season, it seems) give off the air of an affluent mid/late-20s/early 30s couple rather than a pair of high schoolers. The clothes, the car, the fact that they no longer seem to be attending school (despite the manga version)...

Score: 6/10

-Episode 180 - Calling of the Shining Stars: Enter Haruka and Michiru -

*sees title* Uh-oh, here comes trouble.

I've spent so much time in the manga-Crystal-verse that I seriously must say once again how WEIRD it is to see Mars absolutely obsessing over those three. Like, puckering-up-smooching-her-ticket-obsessing. I remember she liked boys well enough in the prior seasons, but man, they really inverted her personality here from the original.

Confirmed, Iron Mouse has no idea who would have a Star Seed. What the heck. Bigger plot hole/bad writing than nobody thinking to check the kid that keeps calling the Pegasus for the dream he's hiding in. That or Galaxia is playing mindgames with her own minions for no good reason.

I'd love to know more about why the Starlights are such music stars. Were they always talented at music even back home? Did they learn here? Are instruments the same on both our planets?!

I guess Michiru is trying to cozy up to get information out of Seiya, after her curiosity/suspicion during the concert, but I really dislike the flirt scene. Even if neither of them were serious about it, going so far as to ask Seiya for help undressing is just... ick. And then using the same line on Haruka after the fact? Double-ick.

I swear Iron Mouse said "Bye-biiiiitch" as she bailed, lol

What causes a person to turn into a Sailor Phage when their star seed is removed, anyway? Is the seed contaminated somehow when it's taken out?

So the Starlights are peddling toys now have upgraded, huh?

The Starlights and Moon are having an actual non-bristely conversation! They're going to get along! Finally! Yay!

Aaaand here come the Outers to ruin it all. Cool. Great. So glad you all finally stopped making out long enough to pay attention and show up and ruin everything just as peace was being accomplished. "It's our job to protect you from outside invaders!" Then were were you for the last seven episodes?!

I have no real opinion on the whole Usagi/Seiya ship, but when they have sweet interactions with each other, I feel sorry for them for their affiliates interrupting and ruining everything. They seem like they could have a genuinely sweet friendship, if nothing else.

Score: 7/10. It was nice seeing the Starlights actually perform with Michiru, and the animation has been consistently nice to look at. That said, this episode really soured my attitude towards Uranus and Neptune.

-Episode 181 - Seiya and Usagi's Heart-Pounding Date -

Oh boy, I've heard about this one. This should be fun.

Usagi's idea of a busy day: "I have to eat breakfast, Watch TV and read a manga, and eat sweets and play video games..." Yeah, I'd be grumpy if someone demanded I go out with them on such a busy day, too. Probably sounds like fun to most of us, lol.

Why is Ami being weird?

I wonder how Galaxia produces these phones wherever she wishes. She can just poof them into existence? Which Senshi's power did she steal to do that? XD Still, poor Iron Mouse. Too bad this isn't the era of Sailor Moon healing all the baddies.

I can't help but wonder who decided to take Uranus and Neptune in a more "adult" direction. I think it was first noticeable in the SuperS movie and continues here. It's like, yeah, of course they've been in a committed relationship this whole time, but is this whole season just going to be innuendo between them? I guess hitting 16 really turned them into horndogs.

Luna: "Is Seiya really such a bad guy?" I DUNNO YOU LIVED WITH HIM FOR A WHILE YOU TELL US

Ok, I gotta admit, the 'date' between Usagi and Seiya is cute. Seeing them freaking out on rollercoasters, scary haunted houses, all the rest... I'm getting a lot more charming chemistry here than the series tended to show between Mamoru and Usagi. I know some folks love their relationship in the anime, but gawd, Mamoru is always SO STIFF and uptight with her. These two actually feel like they could develop a real relationship if not for that pesky reincarnation past love stuff. XP

That flashback image to Mamo and Usa... damn, he's showing more cleavage than the Starlights! Put those away! This is a kids' show!

Interesting... so the Starlights got their more fleshed out transformations after the new versions of their attacks. I guess since the toy was already established in that animation there wasn't as much of a rush to update it... still, I wouldn't have expected to see a variation in stock footage THIS far into the series.

FUN FACT: The subbers can't get the translation on these attacks right much more than the original DiC dub. Today Star Fighter used "Star SIRIUS Laser"... Which could be an interesting pun, if it were intentional, but no, it's just a mistranslation. Good job there, Viz!

I'm so confused by the writing in this season. Galaxia sees Iron Mouse on the verge of getting a genuine Star Seed, kills her, and then warns the others to "Stay out of her way" if they don't want the same to happen to them? Her whole goal is to secure ALL Star Seeds, right? Why would she say that to other Sailor Senshi? I really can't tell if this writing is due to poor plot management (they were still figuring out the story as they went) or what. It doesn't SEEM like she's toying with the Starlights and Moon... (RIP Iron Mouse...)

The selfish attitudes of the Starlights continue. You didn't come to Earth to protect it, you're actively arguing you're NOT here to protect it, yet you're the ones who drew attention here from Galaxia. Maybe the Outers should throw them out after all... :|

Episode review: 8/10. Actually one of the better episodes IMO so far.

- Episode 182 - Invaders from Outer Space: The Coming of Siren -

Oh no. Another pink-haired gremlin has arrived. We're doomed.

Whose Star Seeds is Galaxia grinding in her hand? Is the implication that it's the three Animamates she's talking to? Kind of grim.

Ok, Iron Mouse is out, Sailor Lingerie - Seiren - is up.

DAMN, Rei. WTF. All the inners are wearing pretty normal outfits, but she's looking like a delinquent with the cleavage window and the exposed midrif. Trying to draw the attention of a Three Light? Or perhaps breaking away from the restrictiveness of Catholic schooling? :P

Nice to see our dear Setsuna again. The random ice cream she's munching was an amusing touch.

Usagi: "Why is everyone always telling me to be careful?" 'CUZ YOU'RE THE PRINCESSU OBVIOUSLY

So Seiren is a total ditz. And for some reason Lead Crow thinks said total ditz is her rival. I don't have high hopes for these two accomplishing anything.

Being a Police Officer for a day is 'all part of an idols' work', huh? The writing in this season, I swear...

Seeing these three dweebs as cops just makes me miss the PGSM series and the goofy Act Zero.

Standing on Pluto's talisman? The NERVE.

I feel like the animation director on this episode was kinda... thirsty. The Starlights are being posed in paritcularly provocative poses, Rei with her outfit, some of the shots of the two new Animamates... (I'd provide screenshots but they're blocked from official streams)

Pluto's getting thrown around like a ping-pong ball in this episode. She shows up all cryptic to reveal some pertinent information on the enemy but spends the rest of it going "YOU'RE our enemy?" "That's a PHAGE?!" "YOU'RE the Starlights?!" Like... get yo [BLEEP] together, Setsuna...

Usagi has no idea who this kid is, how she managed to brainwash her family, but is so accustomed to the familial gaslighting and brainwashing from Chibi-Usa she's fine with it. Poor thing.

Episode score: 7/10. Bumped up from 6 due to Pluto.

If there was a season where the MoTD format felt completely unnecessary and forced, it’s this one. It’s like it wants to go down the route of ‘mature high school shoujo’ with the love triangle and emotional hijinks but they never have enough time to do so because they always have to include some contrived scenario in order feature a throwaway VoTD and laughable 3 minute fight sequence to make Bandai happy and sell some toys. I mean this was always a thing but it’s at its worst in this season. Also doesn’t help that all the monsters are basically played for laughs and pose no threat what-so-ever. It works in something lighthearted like SuperS but feels completely out of place here.
