Thread title is self-explanatory. Tell us what you like about Sailor Mercury.
-----
It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since I got into Sailor Moon. I think of all the Sailor Guardians, I can identify with Sailor Mercury the most. She is all that: Beautiful, intelligent, brave, loyal and caring. The intelligent part is the one part I dig most about her, which is one reason why she's been my fave all these years. :D Here's to Sailor Mercury!

I'm just better stating what I don't like about her since the list of things I do like would probably be as long as the Bible.
She can fall a bit flat in her anime adaptation and she can very easily come off as a trope, the nerdy and shy one of the group.
I hate to say it, but she's the character with the least amount of development and I would even as far as to say she has the least amount of progression in the show, yes she becomes more confident in herself throughout, but that can only take her so far.
And I know I'm nitpicking here, but can I address that there is no freaking way she is that smart and does not have a type of mental disorder along with it, not even some level of anxiety or something, how??
Anyways I love her, best waifu, 100%, please don't kill me.

Heh, I remember when I first starting noticing stuff about this series online, it was Jupiter and Neptune that first caught my eye due to their uber-hotness.

But when I started watching the series in earnest, I gravitated toward Mercury. I just have a thing for the super-intelligent girls, for one thing.

There are lots of things I like about Sailor Mercury, but one aspect of her that I drew me to her was that she was the "smart one" of the group....but also the heart in much of Classic.

Usually in animated shows, the "nerd" was always the socially awkward tinkerer who preferred machines over people, or was just so earnest in his or her pursuit of science or mechanics that they were oblivious to those around them. Nerds also tended to have an obnoxiously obsequious nature due to being the teacher's pet...something that I didn't see in myself at all. At worst they would be mad scientists; at best, they would be problem solvers.

However, Sailor Mercury, despite being the brain, wasn't clumsy, cruel, or cowardly. She was responsible, brave, and even when she wasn't effective, she went out there and tried, and she genuinely cared about people in a way that even early Sailor Moon did not.

She's the genius good girl...something that even today you don't see all that often. The smart one being the moral center of the group is unusual. As the series wore on, Sailor Moon became the moral center and Sailor Mercury's caring nature became more window-dressing, but still, that's one reason why I liked her; she wasn't just a good student but a good person.

Agree with you Nadia. Sailor Mercury is genius good girl. She is really smart and very courage. She is always ready to support her friends. As for me, her character in the cartoon isn't disclosed enought. Me and my colleague from https://samedaypapers.com are big fans of Sailor Mercury, we even founded her fan club in our city=) Our colleaguesa and some friends don't really understand us, so it's good to have such forum.

Same here. Ami tends to be the quietest of the senshi, so all the Otaku geeks assume she's some crazed sex kitten under all her nerdiness. I do like the R episode whereas she attacks a droid on her own when said MoTD was showing illusions that no one wants her around.
Trying to play Ami route in Sailor Moon Another Story and found out she's pretty weak against her Opposite Senshi counter part. But did they have to have a perverted doctor to join her? Just it was a pain to go through.

well for one I think she's cute, I love that she's intelligent, I like that her abilities are more of a defensive type as I feel every team needs one
she's not my favorite but I appreciate her character and what she brings to the table.

While Mercury definitely isn’t my favorite of the original gang, I do definitely like a lot about her. I love how she’s the voice of the reason for the group, which is desperately needed with Usagi’s, Rei’s, and Minako’s shenanigans in particular. Her levity moments mentioning studying and such at various times was also fun. Ami’s sacrificial moment breaking the crystal with the computer was perfect and showed her smarts. (Probably one of my favorite of her moments)

The first thing that I liked about her as a kid was her hairstyle, thought it was pretty (for some reason I like short hairstyles for anime girls, dunno why), I also like her usage of water powers (I've always liked water powers, I dunno why), and her intelligent, caring, kind, sweet, personality, and I could even relate to her in ways (got good grades in school most of the time, ate sandwiches most of the time, blue is my favorite color, I like chess and swimming and reading), I think she and Mars were the most developed of the original Inner Senshi, and not gonna lie, I had a crush on her when I was a teen, and like Ami, I'd get all nervous thinking about getting someone special.

Plus, :ami: did have cute and funny moments like this:

Ami is a smart introvert so she may not seem to be actively doing as much to help her friends at first glance. Take the time when everyone got sick, you aren't going to see Ami sharing her germs with others but there is Minako running round exhausting everyone with disgusting porridge. Ami is a big picture thinker, she knows how important it is for her friends to study and for them to become close as a team. Although all the girls claim to be traumatised by being outcasts of one kind or another before they met Usagi (except maybe Mina although even she had lost a lot), Ami was really alone and so she does everything she can to keep the team together. In PGSM she spends a lot of time in the secret base at Crown knitting gifts for her friends and trying to keep the team together when they are going their different directions which is really heart wrenching to watch. Although at times you could also say she has a colder, more calculating nature than the others, like when she made serious plans to leave her friends for the greater good of studying abroad or how she is turned for devastating effect for use by the enemy as Dark Mercury. Ami is very sensitive to the feelings of others though and this is why she gets on very well with Mako even though she has trouble expressing her strong feelings towards her which is probably just because she doesn't want to be hurt. Check out how frustrated Ami gets when Mako goes swooning over Haruka but she can't express her feelings. Whether it's the manga, the anime or live action, Ami is always there to cool off her hot headed friends and enemies when required. Her death at D-point in the 90s anime was really frightening (I've watched that episode way to many times). I like all these qualities about Ami and I think the Sailor Senshi would feel very incomplete without her. She was also considered the most popular team member in Japan before the 90's anime mixed things up a little.

It's probably much more practical and environment-friendly anyway. ;) Long hair as :rei:'s, :minako:'s, :usagi:'s, :setsuna:'s, and to an extent possibly even :mako:'s bears too much of a risk of getting tangled up somewhere, being stepped on or grabbed to pull their heads back and simply slit their throats during a fight. That's supposedly why the Romans kept theirs short. [/:ami: mode]

I did like in the original series how her glasses referenced the Terminator.

It’s great that Amy is a kind hearted introvert.

To be honest Ami/ Mercury is far from being my favorite character. One of the reasons is pretty shallow - didn't like her short hair as a kid. :D Still I grew loving her character more later on once I actually watched the show with English subtitles and was able to understand it and appreciate it. The reason I like Ami in the old show is the fact she is the only character with actual and consistent character development. Many people prise the 90s show for the character development, but it is not really there. All of the girls are the same most of the time with occasional moments of maturity or progress that are immediately forgotten in a couple of minutes or episodes. But Ami indeed changes and have actual development in a way the rest of the character don't. She started as timid girl, loner and gradually relaxed more and more, learning how to have fun, how to approach strangers, how to make friends, how to be a normal teenager (despite it being by secretly fangirling on Boys Band and even implied as somewhat fujoushi) and it all was always true t her character.

Ami isn't my favorite senshi but if I had to list two reasons why i like her they would be
1. Moments when her normie side which she hides way more effectively than Rei slips through.
2. She sometimes drops truth bombs so heavy they are practically meta commentary. Like in episode 49 when Usagi asked her about wanting to fall in love, she said with a straight face that they were too young to really know what love is and using the word so lightly was disrespectful. Needless to say Usagi was crushed by this level of maturity and fell awkwardly silent. This was highly amusing in spite of or maybe because of love is a central theme of the story and Usagi is in an eternal miraculous romantic affair.
