You all know how the dub gave Princess Serena a more regal-sounding voice, right? To me, it sounds very artificial and awkward. I think they should have made their voices similar, like how the original had Princess Serenity sound just like Usagi, only less whiny.

"What DON'T you like about the English dub, exactly?"

- I don't agree with editing same sex couples and LGBT characters
- Didn't dub all of it (missing episodes, Stars, Ami's First Love, and the Super S specials)
- Lines that are out of character (Neptune saying "It's our turn to give these candies cavities" )
- Too cheesy, outdated, and annoying to me (though I'm super excited for the re-dub)

Yes, I really like that they tried to do this. It's really interesting to have Princess Serena be given an additional kind of personality and speech on top of her normal self.

Which I also agree with. This is part of why I don't like Terri Hawks too much in these parts, she completely screws up the high style of speech and makes it sound completely forced.

I like that they tried the emphasize and delineate the character this way, as opposed to the sub, but she really can't make it work, which ends up being the only real problem. I found Japanese Serenity to be bland to the point of pointlessness, Usagi barely registered any change in attitude and nothing about it really carried across to her normal life.

I imagine that was intentional. Serenity may be older and more mature, but she's not an entirely different person. She still seems to have classic Usagi moments time to time, after all. (like her letters to her past self in both the anime and manga XD) I do appreciate what the dub was trying to do though, and think Linda managed to pull it off well at least. :) (too bad we couldn't hear Tracey instead of Terri during the Dic parts though)

I also didn't like the random Ann and Alan arc at the beginning of R. That was weird. lol
That wasn't unique to the dub, though...

Also (CONTROVERSIAL OPINION) I consider that arc to be far superior to the main arc of R, which is the low point of the whole series for me.
I agree with you...it wasn't my favorite season either. Hopefully the new series will make it better. I did like it in the manga.

I also agree with you guys. Never cared for the main arc of R that much aside from a select few episodes. Was really surprised when I first read the manga and saw how much better that version is. Definitely hope Crystal will last long enough to give us a proper adaptation of it. :)

Also, another thing I dislike about the dub: The insert song used in the R finale. "La Soldier" is so badass, and what do they replace it with? Something that sounds like a song you'd hear in a Barbie cartoon. :/ Terri Hawkes' orgasms, err, battle cries, didn't help either...

I think they used the name Serena because it kinda sounded a bit like Serenity.
...So they could make it even more obvious that she was the princess?
Its as obvious as having the Japanese surnames based on the elements of the planets in Japanese... except for Venus.

I didn't like Linda Ballantyne.
And I did give her a chance I watched all of S and SUperS dubbed.
Still thought she sounded way too old. I think she does a real good job playing villains though. She played a couple in the anime and she voiced Princess Snow Kaguya in the S movie.

I thought the Cloverway dub was awful, however at least the DiC dub is still watchable... I prefer the original subbed episodes.
Hmm yeah I guess. I like the Cloverway voices. The only thing I hate about Cloverway is that the voices are too loud so you often can't hear the sound effects and music. This makes scenes dull and less lively compared to the original.

Lol I thought Linda Ballantyne did a cute voice for Serena. She sounded so funny and was great in emotional scenes, too. lol :D

SOMETIMES her voice was cute... sometimes her serena sounded okay! But it was a lot of hit and missing.
It's mainly the comedic scenes that seem to bother people, since she went really over the top with them. But most people agree that her Princess Serenity voice was fantastic. If only she could manage to keep a voice like that going all the time and never tried to imitate Terri to begin with, I think a lot more people would like her. (since she is a talented actress at least)

I think that was the main problem for me. :?
Her trying realy hard to imitate terri (forced to imitate). I've heard her in other roles and she's usually done real good.

I definitely understand, she can get pretty shrill and scratchy sounding. XD

What's weird is lots of people auditioned to replace Terri, but apparently they thought she was the best. :? To be fair though, she said she was able to better imitate her while auditioning, because they would play a few clips of Terri and she'd just repeat them in her best Terri voice. She said the reason it went downhill when the actual dubbing started was because she instead had to try to do the line how she think Terri would. (and they played only one or two Terri clips to remind her of how she sounded than a lot of them)

Thank goodness after about 4 or 5 episodes she decided to try to do her own thing, and they agreed it was better. It was a definite improvement over her poorly imitating Terri at least. It's strange they never told her to be less shrill or try to do a more youthful sounding voice though. :P

I noticed that a lot of the time the dialogue in the first season at times never fit the exaggerated comedic emotions the characters are feeling in accordance with the scene. Its as if the director just ignored them. I know he didnt really care too much about accuracy or fluidity because of their time constraints but the quality of the dub is just so bad I'm surprised people actually prefer it.
There are some dub scenes where the faces dont at all match where the dialogue was rewritten to say at all entirely as well. Then of course the infamous example of that kid who flashed ChibiUsa saying something totally unrelated to what he was doing but thats an extreme example. They could have just cut the scene out rather than that shoddy job trying to censor it.

Theres the infamous Day of Destiny episode that was just awfully handled and infamous at the cons now (which these examples are shown at following)
Terri's horrible attempts to force an emotional "Noo" cries. The first in the scene right before the Silver Crystal is revealed, and the other time where she tries to Escalate moon healing on Mamoru. Though Terri's preformance picked up when she was explaining the locket. I dunno, I hate the dub because of the inconsistency in preformances.

Then there's an error that really bugged me when the Sailor Guardians are fighting the Dreamland park doll and Rei gets her arm covered in rocks. She yells "Mars! Fire-Balls Str-arge!"(Strike/Charge) where she flubs it mid-line and they didnt even try to fix it. Its laziness like that is what makes the Dic dub just so unwatchable for me a lot of the time.

Though the most annoying thing of the Dub for me is the really bad childish insults the Sailor Soldiers throw at the Dark Kingdom Generals. The "Nega-crud / Nega-slease / Nega-Twit" stuff like that just gets on my nerves more than anything more so than Zoicites dub laugh. :P

There are also minor nitpicks with the character chemistry that I think is already understood to be bad. Its how much everyone seems to rip on Usagi's hairstyle a lot in the show. Most notably in the "Bad hair day" episode where they kept poking at how dumb they thought it looked to them.

Finally its the tag-line misnamed figures in the show that had me stuck on before I learned most of the correct names. Like the "Negaverse / Negaforce" thing. Its pretty embarassing when you try to be honest with people here and you use it in a mistaken-identity reference only for them to attack you for it; when its the dub's fault for training people on those terms.

The dub voices, overall, were actually really good.

The thing I didn't like about the dub was how they made up things (Nevaverse), changed plot points, and kept making mistakes with the attack names and transformation phrases.

Otherwise, the actors were good (Except Serena for season 3 and 4, wow, she sucked (my opinion).

I think when people fault the dub, they are faulting all of the edits to the story, not the voice acting in particular.

I like the English dub but here are some problems with it

1. Voice are hit and miss. Yes I actually think the main cast is quite good, ignoring Ballatyne and Amy's second VA but then you get voice actors like Catzi, Ann, multiple little "kid voices" (why are you having 30 year old men voice little boys DiC/Optimum?), Zirconia and the Amazon Trio who all bizarrely sound like characters from Avenue Q (tell me Fish Eye does not sound like Kate Monster and Zirconia does not sound like Trekkie Monster?! Someone needs to do Internet is for Porn with these characters). For all the good voices you get some horrible voices.

2. It has low quality control. I'm not just talking the S and SuperS with its horrible audio mixing, attacks changing every episode, Messiah getting 20 different names, the talisman getting 6 different names; but I'm also talking about the first two seasons where the Ginzuishou gets called different names, they never remember which is the Negaverse and which is the Negaforce, Jupiter's Supreme Thunder has like 3 different names, Sailor Moon said Moon Star Power for like 2 or 3 straight episodes (Presumably because the show was dubbed out of order and they dubbed those two episodes before any other Crystal Power Make-up episodes and later decided to use the original name I suppose?) . At least the Cloverway era had the excuse of being rushed by Toonami to have 77 episodes dubbed to air over 6 months.

3. Some really good episodes get skipped.Well actually most of the episodes they skipped weren't a big loss but they skipped episode 42 the best Sailor Senshi spotlight episode and it was really sad because until that episode Minako was little more than the 5th girl who mixed up her proverbs (and since the dub eliminated that little quirk, Mina was just the 5th Sailor Scout with no defining traits until Serena clone in S). and that episode gave her so much depth

4. They replaced the score. I mean I like the DiC score but the original score is just so much better. If you think otherwise watch the edited versions of the 3 movies where they mostly replace the original score with DiC music but keep some of the Japanese music. The Japanese music's fully orchestral score stands out so much in contrast to DiC's catchy but homogeneous score.
