The 1:1 adaption killed it. If you stick with a storyboard which is the manga which is NOT a storyboard and you don't permit yourself a required creativity freedom that you def need as a screenwriter, the outcome is likely to be doomed. I bet if they had to squeeze de 1st story arc into 6 episodes, the outcome would have been better, because they had to rethink and rewrite the whole structure and there wouldn't be the excuse "but it's in the manga...". The story is simple and can be broken down to a minimum, and still being faithful to the manga. Yes, wasted potential! They could have included side-stories, Casablanca Memory for instance, to tell an unseen story and to give depth to a character. And still be faithful to Naoko's vision.

for me the 1:1 adaptation wasnt bad, the bad thing was when they tried to do something diferent from the manga and having the 1:1 XD, mh if they followed the manga the 1:1 will go great, the side storys i prefer them as ovas, maybe in every bluray some ova but well nop that didnt happen =(

Sadly, like others said, S1 wasnt 1:1 adaptation, it removed most of humor, and altered stuff for worse (Venus and others didnt kill Generals and Beryl, have that stupid romance plot that went nowhere and ended terribly) if it went S3 route from beginning, it would be so much better.

Season 4 because no matter how good those movies are they need to make up for the torture of waiting for them with such precious little information. Unforgivable! Their PR team should be punished in the name of the moon.

/me returns to my trauma recovery therapy of playing with my Moonie plushies, pullips and figuarts.

Look at La Reconquista and the Nogizaka46 musical - they're both around 2.5 hours long (roughly the length of six episodes) and both did an infinitely better job of retelling the Dark Kingdom arc (good pacing, good characterization) while still staying relatively close to the manga than Crystal did. And surely it's cheaper to produce six episodes than it is to produce fourteen... If the recent string of musicals had been Crystal instead, Toei could have saved a bunch of time and money AND created a far superior product.
