2014 was a pretty bad year for Toei in general. They were moving their staff to a different building, if I remember correctly, and had so many projects that their staff was spread as thin as possible. Much of the staff on Crystal have very decent backgrounds, but mismanagement can kill a series.

This. Their problem is the quality of their management staff - moving office, amount of projects, & such shouldn't be an excuse at all, as they can be handled w/ good planning/arrangement & execution to ensure that the quality of their productions won't be affected. Even those natural/human disasters which can't be foreseen & controlled ahead can only be limited/qualified excuses, as it all depends on how they're handled afterwards.

Animation is one problem but sadly Crystal was full of other issues including poor writing. Like who's idea was to tone down the humor of the manga? Who thought that the changes (interesting ideas - i'll give them that) are a good idea when you're working on 1:1 adaptation? Its incredible to think that they could've mess up adapting one chapter into one episode but they did. Even the designs - as beautiful as they can be at times - just werent very functional because Naoko color artwork =/= Naoko's manga drawings. Naoko's manga's tend to be very inconsistent when it comes to art and thats her strenght. Thats why her mangas are dynamic when its necessary and subtle/elegant when its needed. Yukie Sakou's designs only reflected her color artwork. Animation and schedule just made everything worse...

8 shows every week (or 7 plus 1 bi-weekly series).

-One Piece - And still going for better or worse.

-Happiness Charge Precure - Said it before but this too was a mess.

-DBZ Kai - The Majin Buu arc, replacing the flop that was Toriko, started airing in April. It's easy to dismiss this because of what Kai was but then there were differences between this and the international versions that were originally worked on since 2012 which included corrected & newly-produced OP & ED animation (especially with the new songs used to replace what everyone outside Japan got) and a shorter amount of episodes (61 instead of 69...though it was originally planned to be 48 ).

-Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro - This replaced Saint Seiya Omega in April and only lasted 23 episodes before World Trigger replaced that during the Fall....and those familiar with World Trigger remember how bad that anime started out production-wise (and also how bad the adaptation itself turned out in general).

-Majin Bone - Started in April and lasted a year, heard good things about it but the interesting thing to me was that they had the CG work done at Dimps of all places.

-Marvel Disk Wars: Avengers - Also started in April and lasted a year, heard good things about it as well and it had some good animated cuts with some of their best guys involved.

-Kindaichi Case Files Returns - Also started in April and lasted until September, then got a second season which ran from October 2015-March 2016.

-Sailor Moon Crystal....

We look at the amount they had here along with other stuff like movies (DBZ Resurrection F, Digimon Tri, etc), ONAs (Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold, Robot Girls Z Plus) and yeah, 2014-2015 was a real bad time.

When both the writing & animation, which I consider as the core elements of an anime production (especially the writing, personally), suck, what's left are mainly the character designs, voice acting, & music. :(

So which latest/last TOEI production, anime movie or series, had a good - gorgeous quality? For example, I consider the Sailor Moon SuperS movie as a quality product.
-Kyousougiga (2011-2012 ONA & 2013 TV series)

-The Happiness Charge Precure movie (2014), worth including because while the show was a mess, the movie was actually fine and had different staff involved (including the current Crystal director).

-Tiger Mask W (2016) though most of the good there was during the wrestling matches.

-GeGeGe no Kitaro (2018 ), I've heard this had a good production schedule, it's just too bad that everyone dismisses it because it replaced Dragon Ball Super (though not surprising since the same kinda happened when Toriko replaced Kai in 2011).

-The Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie (2018 )

Toei has some gems here and there, but overall they have never been a studio that produce quality shows. They just had talent in the past to put their hands on promising franchises and make popular shows. But then there were not as many studios, not as many competing shows, so it was easier on them to do something popular without much effort. Even in Sailor Moon Movies once they are on blu ray you can see a lot more detail and a lot of the bad frames and long shots looking way oфf than they did prior HD release. If Toei didnt have a massive history with big popular franchises, if they were new studio and delivered the quality they do, they would have survived for 10 years at best.

Honestly, the amount of delays, no news and a bunch of other factors have me questioning whether or not this is still happening. I wasn't a fan of the two part film format, though, I decided to give it a chance. Now, I am seriously doubtful, but hey, I can always be pleasantly surprised.
Delays? What delays?
Since it was never announced, it has not been delayed. Movie productions can take years to complete.

Nice! So TOEi CAN deliver good quality. At least those trailers here show that they put effort in it.

They did something with Broly that I haven't seen in a while: the outlines of the characters are thicker and look like the handdrawn ones from the pre-computer-anime era. This is a very nice detail! I always kinda disliked the thin contures of anime nowadays.

One of the very few things I liked about Crystal S1 and 2 animation was the way the lines were slightly thicker. Wherever these two arcs look their best is when the line artwork was thicker.

That can also give it a manga-like feel.

Not to mention, who's idea was it to push the Inners out of the spotlight and make them useless, whilst making Moon so obsessed with Mamoru? It wasn't like that in the manga, the Sailors still felt like they had a purpose and had personalities.

I will never forgive Crystal for removing the Inners killing the Shitenou. Or Venus killing Beryl.

Never.

It’s amazing how Crystal removed the best aspects of the manga and amplified the worst stuff

It's always fun to look back to the reactions of that episode when it premiered because it still holds true to this day at being the worst thing of the entire adaptation....and will probably still be the worst after this is all over.

I really wouldn't say they made the senshie completely useless in the first season. They just wanted the shitenou to live longer. To confirm sxs
Act five Jupiter was able to kill youma
Venus was still able to stop zoisite.Personally the Inners always had issues with being competent. The only one who did an excellent job with developing, and character was PGSMSeason 1 probably would be nicer if some episodes were two partners
Like episode 12 should been a two parter.

If i remember correctly, that was one of episodes you had to wait 3 weeks for, back then we were hoping more time means better quality episode, oh how wrong we were.

Yeah, Crystal S1 finale was so terrible i dont want to watch it ever again, it hurt even more when you remember how awesome Classic finale was (DD Girls vs Inners, Inners death)

And yes, Shinnetou plot was just awful, not only it lead to nothing, it took away one of few Times Inners actually beaten up enemy, and dont get me started on Usagi stealing Beryl's kill from Venus...

I think this episode wasn't such case, as I am pretty sure episode 11 was the one we waited 3 weeks for. Could be wrong. While I love the Classic finale, and I love episode 45 in particular, I have to admit some plot points like the way DD girls successfully lured them several times using the same illusion plot really dumped the experiences. Still miles better than Crystal.
