Why did Viz rename the sisters from Ayakash to Specter?

Because that's what they're called in the current English translation of the manga, which is the source of other terms like "Evil spirits, be exorcised" and "Legendary Silver Crystal."

Ayakashi is typically translated as phantom, and specter is a nice approximation that adds some alliteration.
I agree, and maybe just getting easier understanding to wider audiences is a factor too. Although when I watched it in subs myself, the sub I watched had Phantom and the one my friend watched said "Akayashi". I guess we can't all agree on translating ;3

Sounds like the subs you watched were the old ADV DVD subs, while your friend instead possibly watched the Sailor Moon Center fansubs (which used the ADV subs as a base, but edited a few things).

In the Italian dub of Crystal they kept Ayakashi, the best choice in my opinion. However a lot of fans were angry at First because they used "Legendary Silver Crystal" instead of " Phantom Silver Crystal".

Where did the idea of them being called The Weird Sisters come from? I swear that was a thing
I think because "ayakashi" in a different sense can mean "strange" though I think it's written differently.

To be honest, when I heard Specter sisters, I couldn't help but make a few Bond jokes because of the movie Spectre coming out at the time.

Well me personally I tend to prefer Ayakashi for the name of the Sisters as it refers to a specific Yokai in Japanese mythology that had Siren like qualities.

Right now, I have the mental image of Death Phantom stroking a white, furry cat.
