It weird to see people still asking where is sailor earth or people confuse that Mamoru is sailor earth. I think it's confusing because Naoko said only sailors are girls. I look at it this way

If Mamoru was a girl. He would be sailor earth. He would have a fuka but since he is a boy. He is just a regular guardian .Or a male elewuivent of a Sailor Senshi

"All the Sailor Scouts are girls," Takeuchi said firmly. "Haruka has always been a girl and always will be."

As I pointed out, "All the Sailor Scouts are girls" doesn't mean the same thing as "Only girls can be Sailor Scouts," and the fact she makes this statement in response to questions about the Starlights and Uranus suggests that she is just clarifying the sex/gender of her characters. Given her first quote in the part of the article I excerpted is to say Tuxedo Mask is, indeed, Sailor Earth - and given that he does have a Sailor Crystal and Sailor Lead Crow says anyone with a Sailor Crystal can call themselves a Sailor Guardian - that further indicates she had no "girls only" rule. It's just that she was writing a story about girls for girls, and she finds it easier and more fun to write girl characters, that she didn't include any other male Sailors, and it's because she wanted to include a mysterious man wearing a tuxedo in the story that Mamoru wears a tux instead of a sailor suit. If Naoko were writing the manga today, maybe there would be more of a gender balanced Sailor Team; who knows? She undoubtedly had to have approved of the Sailor Moon Crystal x Monster Strike campaign, which featured male and nonbinary models dressed as Sailors and had a gender-inclusive message, so at the very least she's fine with the idea.

I think the cast would still be girls. It still gears towards girls. That is an interesting take on the whole thing. In my brain, I just thought they were sailor guardian and guardians.

Most shojou anime aimed at 4-12 year olds rarely have a hyper focus on male characters unless it's important like a love interest, family or a villain. Hence how you don't see Princess Serenity's father or rarely see Usagi's father. Same can be said for the source material, aimed at 9-15 year olds.

In fact, in episode 66 of the classic anime, that was Usagi's father's last appearance in the anime. This is just an example of the shojou anime\manga's rule of focus I just mentioned and he was usually depicted as a magazine editor.

Personally it's hard for me to accept Mamoru as Earth's Guardian for the following reasons:
  1. First and foremost, I don't even see why Earth would even need a guardian warrior. Sailor Guardians are typically named after celestial objects, and from a Terran perspective, that excludes Earth by definition. I like the idea that these girls are taking power from something other than Earth.
  2. Sailor Moon is the Guardian of Earth's Moon, so she'd fill the thematic role anyway. What purpose would a Sailor Earth serve?
  3. Before Stars, it was suggested that the Sailor Guardians were connected with the Silver Millennium itself. Earth wasn't part of the Silver Millennium. It doesn't deserve a warrior.
  4. Going by the old anime, he is at first forcibly transformed into Tuxedo Mask when Sailor Moon is in danger with no memory of what he did as Tuxedo Mask when he changes back...until he starts gathering Rainbow Crystals. This happens to no other Sailor Guardian, not even Sailor Moon who was not even a Guardian in her previous life, and not even to Sailor Saturn who had to deal with Mistress 9 as well. After the first arc, Mamoru loses his memory, and his subconscious will to protect Sailor Moon manifests as the Moonlight Knight...something that happens to no other Sailor Guardian. There are only a few times a voluntary transformation is actually shown, and unlike the Sailor Guardians, he doesn't seem to correspond to a specific element or attribute. He throws roses, has a cane, and that's essentially it.
  5. Going by the manga/PGSM/Crystal, it's even worse as he just dresses up in a tuxedo, no magic involved (at first). He does get "powers" in the Black Moon arc and onward, but it is still seemingly arbitrary like everything else in the manga.
  6. Back to the old anime, if you take the view that the Starlights are actually male in civilian form and not merely magically disguised as male, this would suggest that any male who had the ability to become a Guardian would change genders to become female Sailor Guardians when transformed. This does not happen with Mamoru.
If Tuxedo Mask weren't so anomalous, it would be easier for me to reconcile him with being the Earth's Guardian. He is unique and that is why people don't want to accept he's Sailor Earth. Sailor Moon is about a group of girls with uniforms saving the world.

Adonis described Venus as its own state under the Moon's suzerainty, little different from how Queen Serenity described Earth.

She said that girls can only be Sailor Senshi however you can be a Senshi or Planetary Guardian you are just not called a Sailor. This may only even apply to the manga and Crystal though as males were still called Sailors as Phages in the 90s anime. So maybe Mamoru could have an upgraded form in the 90s anime where he becomes a male Sailor Earth it is all up to the writer. However again I figured out quickly in the 90s anime that Tuxedo Mask was Earth's Senshi. I figured this because for one he had his own henshin and also he was referred to as the Prince of Earth on the show and given the fact that the other Senshi are Princesses of their Home Planets it didn't take much for me to put two and two together.

Actually it was never stated in the series that Sailor Soldiers in the early series were exclusive to the Silver Millennium Guardian Princess Nadia that was your own interpretation but that was never stated in fact Tuxedo Mask as Earth's Senshi de facto debunks this idea of yours. Also Sailor Moon would not fit the role of an Earth Guardian as she represents Earth's Moon and since it is implied that every celestial object has a Guardian Senshi and Earth is a Celestial Object it would naturally need one of it's own.

Next again just because of the fact that Tuxedo Mask was at first a separate identity from Tuxedo Mask which they later merged and just because of the fact that his subconscious also manifested to be the Moonlight Knight dosen't change the fact that he is a Sailor Senshi. By the same token in SuperS Ami's subconscious manifested itself and chatted with her in SuperS as did Hotaru's subconscious as Sailor Saturn in Sailor Stars. The Sailor Power Guardians in the manga also referred to themselves as the Sailor Senshi's Other selves.

Also Tuxedo Mask does have an element his element is flowers namely plants and he is shown to have healing abilities all which fits his identification with the Earth as those are considered abilities associated with the Earth namely plants and life giving.

Next again as I mentioned with the Starlights that is not true. Again when male humans were transformed into Phage they were still called Sailor this or Sailor that, Sailor Guts being an example. However even if we went by the manga idea that male Sailor Senshi are not called Sailors then maybe male Senshi are called Tuxedos, Masks or Knights or whatever honorific.

Again I don't see why Tuxedo Mask is so hard to accept it was never stated men could not be Senshi he may be the only one shown on the series but he very much is there. Also I don't see how his uniqueness disqualifies him from being Earth's Guardian as many of the Senshi have unique qualities that separate them from the other Senshi. Like for instance it was strongly implied in an audio play that Michiru awoke to become Sailor Neptune by having a series of dreams rather similar to Tuxedo Mask. Which would be fun to explore. It would be cool if she also had a disassociative identity similar to Tuxedo Mask. Maybe she could be a Masked Senshi and be Sailor N. All speculation but it is fun to ponder.

As a rebuttal to this, what about Sailor V? None of the other Sailor Guardians has a "V" form... If Minako can have this weird, unexplained version of her Sailor self, why can't Mamoru have his own Sailor weirdness?

At least in terms of the manga, in Infinity we're told Sailor Saturn will only awaken when the three talismans resonate with each other...but then in the Dream arc, she's able to awaken again just because everyone's in peril, so there really isn't an issue with the circumstances surrounding Mamoru's ability to transform into Tuxedo Mask (whether he's physically putting on his costume, magically transforming, or being transformed without his knowledge) changing.

To be fair, he does have psychometric powers (at least in the manga), so he does have a specific attribute, if not a specific element. (But then, Venus doesn't really have a consistent, clear element either: is it love? light? metal? And what about Moon? Is her element love? light? healing? crystals? mystery? rainbows? therapy?)

Basically.... Inconsistency is the only thing that's been consistently consistent about this franchise since its inception, so that there are inconsistencies with Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask as a Sailor Guardian actually shows that his being a Sailor Guardian is entirely consistent!

^Sailor V is still explicitly a warrior for justice in a Sailor suit though...

I do wish that the anime tackled the transition from V to Venus instead of an episode about her unrequited schoolgirl crush...

I have to agree with the post above. It's one thing if there's inconsistency about the Guardians themselves. It's another thing if there's inconsistency as to what is a Guardian, and Tuxy is more abnormal than all of the differences of Sailor V, Sailor Saturn, and any other Sailor put together. It's not just his awakening, or just his multiple forms, but everything about him that doesn't fit the mold.

I'm not saying, "No, Tuxedo Mask is not Earth's Guardian" but "Here's why I find it hard to see him as a Guardian." He is so far outside of the pattern that it's hard to think of him in the same category. He doesn't even have Earth as part of his superhero name, unlike the other Guardians.

Sailor Kakyuu also dosen't have the name of her Celestial Object in her super hero name. Her celestial object is Kinmoku and yet she is called Sailor Kakyuu.

I hardly take anime cannon in consideration.Since it made a lot of changes to the story.Mamorou is the only guardian we see.So its hard to say if he is the abnoorm or not.

Well for me, I just thought Tuxedo was pretty weak to fight along Sailor Moon in the anime. All he had was roses and words of inspiration to encourage Sailor Moon to defeat the MoTD.

In R, we got him to be sorta a bad ass in the aliens arc. Actually fighting like a sailor soldier, but it was just filler.

At least in the manga, they make him stronger with his own attack which he used in the end of the Infinity Arc. Then in the Dream Arc, he bestow his sailor crystal to help Sailor Moon to become Eternal Sailor Moon. So in the end of arguments, he is a sailor guardian.
