Why do you think Naoko decided for the senshi to have so many dead parents?

- dead father; EDIT: he's not dead, he's just divorced from her mother and he doesn't see Ami much if at all.

Ami's father is not dead. He just lives far away and is a bit too busy.

As Eiichiro Oda said about his characters in One Piece as to why so many of them have dead mothers, he replied, "mothers get in the way of adventure!" meaning that without parents to limit / shape the children, they tend to find their own way and get into adventures. While Sailor Moon sort of forces a destined quest on the senshi, the lack of their parents does still force them to be more than the average teenager:

Ami - self reliant for the most part
Mako - same deal
Hotaru - forced to seek friendship / camaraderie with Chibiusa and others, learns the power of friendship
Haruka / Michiru - apparently not bound by their families they can jetset and do whatever they please
Setsuna - feels like she's just alone regardless and bears that weight.
Usagi / Minako have families and are thus more playful / lazy (but get serious when needed) Though they both had heavy destiny drops on them to force that maturity as opposed to the others.

They were saddled with a huge amount of responsibility. Granted when they met the others some of that burden was lifted (especially for Minako), but still, that's a lot to put on a kid who's had basically a free and easy life until then. Ami, Mako and Rei we know had it hard, by comparison, so when their destiny was revealed they were a bit more prepared for it.

Did you know that in Japan the parent that doesn't get the custody of the child (and apparently joint custody is a rare thing) often never bothers (if that's the right word) to see them him again? It might be Ami's case too.

Yeah but when several members of the main cast have dead or missing parents it's a bit too much/looses its 'charm'.

I guess it's true but it's also kinda twisted of him to approach things like that.....

She still uses his membership card for the fancy club, so they do meet once in a while. Anyway the point is that he is alive.

Only if it's a major focus point. I would also counter that coming from mostly broken families, it's all the more significant that they found a new family in each other.

Another reason why so many of the characters have dead parents; laziness. The fewer characters you have, the fewer characters you have to draw and give visual space to. While this is a problem for all storytelling media, for a manga/comics, this is a specifically unique problem because the art has to tell the story in a set number of pages. Whereas in writing or in animation, you can get away with having an off-screen parent with an added line or two, in a manga, showing is telling.

if they had living parents, there would be more characters to write about. while it could be good for anime fillers, it's unneccessary for the manga. because manga is shorter, takes more effort and you have to get to the final scene sooner. that's my point of view as an amateur writer.
