Why is the Infinity arc called season 3?

I don't know why but it sounds better with the intended subtitles. Sailor Moon Season 4 sounds stupid. I would prefer Sailor Moon Dream. It really puts me in the mood of older anime with the catchy subtitles like Slayers R or Slayers Gorgeous. That's just my opinion on the naming.

To me its just Sailor Moon Crystal and Sailor Moon Crystal Infinity.

If the movies ever come out they’ll just be Sailor Moon Crystal Dream to me.

Sailor Moon Crystal (Season One): One OP, one ED
Sailor Moon Crystal (Season III): Three OPs, three EDs
Sailor Moon Crystal (Season IV): Four OPs, four EDs, basically the movies will be nothing but theme songs!

I always find the naming quite confusing, especially for people unfamiliar with the franchise. It also sounds very unimaginative and generic. There is no rational explanation, at least not for me. If they wanted to market it differently a sub title would have done an even better job to differentiate it. Plus it contradicts the naming. For me ot make sense to combine twe first two story arcs in one, as they were telling a story in past, present and future, while the rest of the manga could have been using subtitles. If the two upcoming films are labeled season 4 it would vaffling as a film name and if they refer to it any other way it would add to the confusion for new fans. Whoever came up with the idea had no brain.

It really isn’t. The Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arc were produced as one 26 episode series. I guess it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme but its having those two arcs grouped together and then having Infinity arc labelled season 3
Sailor Moon Crystal Season I - Dark Kingdom Arc - Act 1 - 13 (13 episodes)
Sailor Moon Crystal Season II - Black Moon Arc - Act 14 - 26 (13 episodes)
Sailor Moon Crystal Season III - Death Buster Arc - Act 27 - 38 (39 episodes)
However, the fact that the fight with Dark Kingdom lasts for 14 episodes prevents them from making the first two season separately.

That doesn’t make it a new season. Arc=/=season

Everything pretty much groups Dark Kingdom arc and Black Moon together and then list Infinity arc separately as season 3. Which again makes no sense.

Inconsistency thy name is Toei. This is yet another, albeit smaller, way in which they royally screwed up this adaptation.

The entire thing should have been called Sailor Moon Crystal with the name of each arc as a subtitle. The manga ended decades ago. The terms and names are all set in stone and familiar to fans to whom this adaptation is supposedly targeted towards. It's a no-brainer.

Instead of "Sailor Moon Crystal" and "Sailor Moon Crystal: Season III", it should have been named the following:

Sailor Moon Crystal: Dark Kingdom
Sailor Moon Crystal: Black Moon
Sailor Moon Crystal: Infinity
Sailor Moon Crystal: Dream
Sailor Moon Crystal: Stars

Simple. Clean. Consistent. Faithful. Appealing.

When the producer calls it a season, it is a season.
Please remember that they premiered episode 14 (act 14) as the first episode of season II, although it is Dark Kingdom arc.
They have all their rights to decide when to produce each season.
If you could read Japanese.

But they didn’t. They treated 26 episodes as one thing. Then decided the next one was season 3

No. You should read the news in the link. Episode 14 is the beginning of Black Moon Arc.

Season I and season II share the same logo, the same OP and ED doesn't mean they are one thing. They could keep the same logo for season III if they want, but it seems that they wanted to evade the bad reputation of the first two.

Toei will probably split up the 2 films further into TV-sized episodes like they did with Digimon Tri and continue to call it Season IV.

Honestly I don't think referring to each arc as a different season is such a bad thing, especially with fans who are not familiar Sailor Moon. I remember Totally Spies season 1 and 2 had the same opening and art style, then season 3 had a different opening and character design. Kind of similar to that.

I know it's a bit different since Totally Spies is a Western animation, and because Sailor Moon Crystal's first 2 arcs got the same treatment and was lumped into one, but it's better moving forward to refer to the Black Moon arc as season 2.

Production probably just decided to redact their original decision to lump episodes 1-26 as "Sailor Moon Crystal" because it would've been weird to have the first 2 arcs as season 1 and then having the Infinity arc as season 2. Tell me that wouldn't be weird. Would you rather be walking around referring to the Infinity arc as Sailor Moon Crystal Season 2?

Not really. We all understand the Makai Tree arc and the Black Moon Clan arc are both part of the second Sailor Moon series Sailor Moon R.

No one seems to have a problem conceiving Dark Kingdom=series one Makai Tree and Black Moon=series two. Pure Hearts=series 3. Pegasus=series four Nehelenia’s Revenge and Stars=series five

Imagine if Toei randomly labeled S of the original 90s anime as season 4
Tell me that wouldn't be weird.
It wouldn’t be weird. The Dark Kingdom and the Black Moon arc where produced as one 26 episode series. Then Infinity arc was produced after In the context of production of Crystal the Infinity arc is season 2.

Would you rather be walking around referring to the Infinity arc as Sailor Moon Crystal Season 2?
Yes. Because that would be correct.

Although I would have preferred if they had simply called it Sailor Moon Crystal Infinity

If they’re going to refer to it as a new season it is season 2.

No one has an issue with that because the Makai Tree arc was a filler arc leading up to the Black Moon arc. Since the dawn of time, the 5 arcs of Sailor Moon has always been 1. Dark Kingdom 2. Black Moon 3. Infinity 4. Dream 5. Stars. It just makes sense that the Black Moon arc of Sailor Moon Crystal would be season 2. But at the end of the day, there's really no point in arguing semantics here.

The Makai tree arc does not lead up to the Black Moon arc. They’re two wholly separate story arcs that are part of Sailor Moon R. Nothing in the Makai tree story carries over to the Black Moon arc.

Since the dawn of time, the 5 arcs of Sailor Moon has always been 1. Dark Kingdom 2. Black Moon 3. Infinity 4. Dream 5. Stars.
Those are the 5 arcs of the manga yes. Again arc=/= season. Sailor Moon R and Sailor Stars both have two arcs.

Hell, the 90s anime split the adaptation of the Dreams arc into SuperS and the first arc of Sailor Stars. Are you going to argue that SuperS and the first six episodes of Sailor Stars are part of a single “season”’because that would be consistent with the argument you’re making.

It just makes sense that the Black Moon arc of Sailor Moon Crystal would be season 2.
If they actually treated Black Moon as season 2 sure. But they didn’t. Dark Kingdom and Black Moon was treated as one 26 episode series that was announced in the beginning and then when the series was announced to adapt Infinity they randomly decided to call Infinity season 3.

Its pretty simple actually: Toei clearly decided to treat Black Moon Arc as a separate season thats why it got a brand new, separate trailer and a brand new poster. They just forgot to update the logo. Later on they simply continued this with the official naming for season 3.
