Why Michiru didn't get more independent plot?

I am a big fan of her, both due to her looks and her character. The 90s anime gave her a very interesting personality: Elegant and smart, but also arrogant/strongheaded and like to make troll comments behind her soft words. Even Haruka sometimes could not catch her tone. That makes her more interesting than the typical "elegant princess" roles. Over all the adaptations, the anime did the best job on her character.

But she didn't get much independent plot, 90% of her plot was with Haruka and Haruka usually takes the spotlight. Thus affected her popularity as a character individually, I always feel bad about that because I really like her..

Haruka appeared more often because of her interactions with Usagi. When they are together with Michiru, it is not always Haruka taking the spotlight, for example, once when Haruka wanted to save a victim of the day, Michiru stopped her because of their mission. It was definitely a cruel thing to do, but they had no other choice; it always strikes me in that scene that Michiru was ready for it

I didn't say always, but overall, Haruka takes the spotlight much more often.

While Haruka is usually in the spotlight with action, I encounter far more fans of Michiru honestly.

I love her too, and the fact she's a violinist makes me love her even more. I've always been a huge sucker for violins/violas/cellos. If I hear any of those three in a soundtrack I'm very happy and usually end up buying it lol.

I feel like the fact that they come in two is a big part of their character, and makes them more endearing. If you see one you know the other is nearby too.

She's always stood out for me hugely even if Haruka is more front and centre in a scene. I also feel the main reason Haruka is is because Michiru allows her to be. Even though Haruka appears to be the "man" of the relationship on the outside it's really Michiru who holds the reins.

I too love her quips. She's such a great character.

The poll has always been a huge gap between them.

A very good character should not be bound with another, regardless of how deep the bond is. The Inner Four all share such bond with Usagi, yet they have their individual stories.

But her popularity is never really high for sure.

Haruka is in the center of the stage because this is a girl show and Usagi is the leading character. So a T would surely become so popular among the girls. And if Michiru is a bit too popular among the characters, it would probably affect Usagi's light.

Also both S and Stars are focused on female characters. Tomoe obviously is not a good choice, and Seiya is Usagi's so they could only have a brief interaction.

I've also found such type of female is usually hard to get stuff to do probably because it's difficult.

I'm not familiar with the polls you're looking at but she is definitely popular. I see cosplays of Neptune far more often and when I was away from the series from late 90s to 2004ish I knew who Neptune was years before Uranus, because she was the one I always heard people talking about. Maybe on the polls you're looking at favors Haruka, but I've seen seen plenty of evidence that Michiru is quite popular too, so it's not just personal opinion.

Even random things like book reviews and stuff if one of them is mentioned, it always seems to be Michiru.

Edit: Apologies, I realized afterward that my first sentence sounded super aggressive so I re-worded it.

There are tons of polls around, even when the manga was out. Haruka was among the top of the characters in her prime and still have a huge popularity among the fans. Michiru is kinda in the middle of the senshi, higher than Makoto and Setsuna around the same rank as Rei(anime).

Don't get me wrong, I love the character very much and that's why I'm a bit pissed off. That's why I was a bit aggressive and didn't have time to edit, sorry.

Oh no worries, I didn't take offense, I just took it as being spirited :)

I know what you mean, I love her too, she's for sure one of my top favourites so it would've been great to see more of her.

For instance in the flashback episode of Haruka where Michiru recruits her, it would've been great if that episode was a sort of "prequel" episode we followed in realtime and was in Michiru's point of view instead.

True, I have paid attention to it. My fanfic was also a try, headcanon:

Michiru/Neptune saw the destruction of the Moon Kingdom in the previous life, she was displeased about how the royals had handled it. So that's where she got the resolve and tried to pick someone who could get her ideas to do things her own way.

Her way of doing things could have been expanded and let her have further character growth.

Also I think a woman like her should have important admirers. Like the senshi having crush on Haruka obviously increased her popularity.

Hi, I totally agree with you! I love Michiru! Actually, i could not care less about her drawing/violin, i like her because she seems like a strong person, and funny too. Interesting story, i was going to create an account here but found out that i already have an account from 10 years ago :) Looked over my old comments and was happy to find out that i liked Michiru back then too :) I thought i only liked Usagi and Minako back then haha. So anyway, yes, there is a feeling that Haruka is "the main one". I find Michiru way more interesting than Haruka though. I think that with her the viewers need to look deeper to see her awesome qualities, as she is not as open as Haruka. She seems cold and even heartless but she is very empathetic inside (even more so than Usagi I think), she just doesn't openly show it, but you can see it from her facial expressions (I think Michiru has the best facial expressions!!) and from some of her actions. For example, when outers tell Usagi to stop seeing Seya Michiru is the one who looks heart broken, but the other two do not. I read characters' descriptions based on their zodiac sing, and Usagi was described as "sympathetic" and Michiru as "empathetic", which is basically deeper that sympathetic. Having such qualities but looking rather cold and unapproachable is what makes her so cool in my opinion. If she were real, i would love to try to become friends with her. I'd probably fail haha, but that scene from Episode 93 where Usagi looks at Michiru playing violin - it's totally how i see Michiru too :) Such a cool character.

Yes, she does have a very good heart inside.

But instead of trusting others like Usagi and the Inner Four, she didn't trust others' judgement and thought most of the ppl are not wise and tough enough to face the situation. She was seeking Haruka also because she thought Haruka share similar thoughts with herself. This is not wrong and usually right, but such overconfidence sometimes could cloud their own mind as shown several times in the plot as well.

I also think anime Demande was a bit similar, he also was willing to do what's good for his ppl, even with dire ways. It was not wrong but could sometimes go wrong as it was shown on his tragedy.
