Putting aside Crystal’s abysmal handling of the ships and complaints of heteronormativity and forced “pair the spares” concept to begin with. I think the reason why Senshi/Shittenou seems to especially ring hollow for a lot of the fandom is because this shipping concept only exists in the Manga/Crystal - aka the version where the Shittenou are barely even characters in their own right and just exist to be Mamoru’s accessories.

Like it’d be one thing if those boys were well-developed characters like in the 90’s anime who you can imagine the many different ways they can bounce off the Inners but no… they’re literally just Mamoru’s accessory boyband.

Like only Manga Kunzite has any *semblance* of a personality (which I think is another reason I do ship Venus/Kunzite but not any of the others) and even then it’s still not as developed as either 90’s anime or PGSM Kunzite.

All those well-fleshed out Sen/Shi fics you see in fandom is relying on pure headcanon and is pairing the Inners with glorified OCs. You’re essentially shipping the girls with literal-who’s.

Love the title of this thread. :cthulhu:

It sure was popular back then with the manga fanatics but it seems to have that Final Fantasy 7 backlash effect which stems from Crystal season 1's rushed production. :booze:

Now I still have to watch La Reconquista which I hear properly fleshes out the Shittenou but I just don't have motivation to watch a concept that sounds terrible to begin with.

Ugh Zoi ::love:: :ami: makes me roll my eyes. :rolleye:

Because it’s boring and repetitive. I like the idea of the senshi being virgin warrriors, devoted protectors of the purinsesu. It could be fun though if one of the inners had an affair (not Venus) with one of the shitennou, maybe Mars (ironically).

Honestly sxs just flesh out the characters more.I prefer crystal backstory. If we had more episodes that flesh the characters our, and see why would they work with each other.

To be honest, I always felt awkward around this idea. Not only were the Shittenou older than the girls (they're 14), but neither of the ships with them make sense. Even Venus x Kunzite (who I know a lot of people would ship) felt off to me.

They should have did it sorta like PGSM where they interacted on certain levels or when certain things were needed.
Yes, Toei should have taken inspiration from PGSM in developing the Guardian Deity/General ships. I loved when Zoicite interacted with Venus and how they both worked to keep the past from repeating. Ami/Nefukichi is another S/S ship I like. I'll always appreciate the scene where Mercury, despite being brainwashed into "Darkury", had a sliver of kindness when she gave Nephrite a new cape.

I don't think any shipping should have been involved, maybe potential shipping through treacherous tactics only to be uncovered in the plot later or something.
It's funny how Jadeite had a crush on :usagi:'s normal form. Sad to see him gone the next episode. It would have been extra funny had :usagi: having a mutual understanding and she convinces him to have a double date with :rei: and ::tuxspeedmask: out of pure petty jealousy.

for one thing it's hypocritical, inners: Princess you mustn't consort with those from Earth
and then on top of Serenity sneaking off to chiba inners go to their respective shittenou pairs

two: where is the chemistry? this pairing is just a prince and his 4 guardians with a princess and her 4 guardians - it's just symmetry for the sake of itself

what do any of the inners and shittenou like about each other on the individual level? why does Ami go with Zoi? why does Mako go with Neph? does anyone actually have the answer? no it's like child taking 2 toys and making them smooch like a barbie and spiderman toy you can physically do it but it doesn't mean anything that's how I feel about this pairing.

three: crystal inserted it out of nowhere - Venus kinda just stops the inners and says hey we used to like these guys remember? :minako::googly: don't kill them and all simultaneously have the same flashback like a hive-mind, it's bad writing.

Just as fast as crystal inserted it they take it away near the finale and now when the shittenou make any kind of re appearance it's like in the manga guiding chiba but you never hear if Kun misses Minako or if Jadeite misses Rei no they pretend it didn't happen cause there was never any chemistry between them.

Osabu was right after all of not approving that arc in the manga in the first place when it was discussed.
