Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the whole idea of the Moonlight Knight that he was the manifestation of Mamoru's love of and need to protect Usagi? Because he hadn't regained his memories yet and thus couldn't transform into Tuxedo Mask, he unconsciously created this avatar to step in and keep Usagi safe?

Then why didn't he show up in Stars? Yeah, Mamoru was dead, but his star seed - his soul, essentially - still existed. A part of him still remained that could have willed the Moonlight Knight back into existence. Surely a little thing like corporeal death shouldn't be enough to get in the way of the Miracle Romance™.

I think including the Moonlight Knight would have been a fun, interesting throwback to an earlier season. It would have added another layer of mystery to why Usagi hadn't heard back from Mamoru. And since the MK is the product of love, it's something Chaos wouldn't understand and have expected, and its confusion vs the real Galaxia's understanding of love, would have perhaps triggered the start of Chaos losing its control over her and Galaxia breaking free.

(And hopefully it would have spared us the Seiya/Usagi drama. Sorry to everyone who ships them!)

What do you think? Would the MK have been a welcome addition to Stars, or are you happy with the season the way it is?

Sure way more than Seiya. I am sorry for the shippers, but for me they were but emotional abuser and otherwise a complete Mamoru clone. Moonlight Knight would have been a cool addition to the season and a nice plot device. In a way he could have played the Chibi Chibi role as starseed, hope and love, while Chibi Chibi could have been the Sailor Cosmos she was supposed to be.

I too would've hugely preferred him over Seiya. Reading your post made me really wish that that's what they had done with the season XD I mean we spent four seasons with them together, I didn't want a rival thrown in all of a sudden. It would be one thing if it happened in season one, but season FIVE?

Despite me poking fun at anime Mamoru at times, I very much missed him in Stars. The season almost felt empty without him. I gather that was sort of the point since Usagi felt very lonely, but the Moonlight Knight could've worked. Throws the fans a bone -- or rather white rose ;) --and it even works with the drama of Usagi not knowing why Mamoru wasn't writing her back, since it would be all if you're here why isn't he answering etc.

I suppose Moonlight Knight didnt show up because Usagi was much, much stronger at the beggining of Stars then she was after season 1 finale and on top of that she had a big and strong team surrounding her.

I mean, she just goes from relying on Tuxedo Mask to save her in a pinch to relying on the Starlights to save her in a pinch, so /shrug/
Yeah but situation changed a lot between Classic and Stars. In the early R they were still just a separated reborn couple with very small number of allies. By Stars they were the future king and queen, with their future daughter, several new allies, several power ups for Usagi.

Moonlight Knight no longer seemed necessary. Also i suppose by losing his body Mamoru couldnt separate his mind/soul anymore so thats also one of the reasons why Moonlight Knight couldnt appear.

Toei has this weird thing where they didn’t really want to acknowledge the Makaiju arc after it happened. In episode 89 they mention Ail and An briefly, and then don’t mention them at all during the SuperS special.

Also, it’d be sort of redundant. I guess the in universe explanation would be that he wasn’t “strong” enough to come alive with Galaxia holding his star seed.

Moonlight Knight was probably some kind of Stand that disappears when its User is killed as opposed to one that lingers after its User's demise.

His soul was stolen (Star Seed). I think that once stolen and the Star Seed held captive, the soul disappears and therefore the person.
Galaxia can revive the soul (Ep 197) but otherwise the person died definitively until his reincarnation (Ep 200).

I'm no fan of moonlight knight but having three starlight's as well as the outers made things pretty crowded so it would've been better, even though I always got the idea that Mamoru still had to be physically available to transform into Moonlight Knight as he would Tuxedo Mask

I mean, if Toei could BS us with "Chibi Chibi is actually Galaxia's Star Seed!" then I'm pretty sure "Mamoru could still generate the Moonlight Knight even though he was dead" is still on the table.

I don't know if it would have worked. Usagi had already known who/what Moonlight Knight was, so witnessing him reappear so soon after Mamoru departed likely would have triggered alarm bells in her head that something was wrong with Mamo.

On the other hand, maybe that internal conflict ("Why is Moonlight Knight here? Did something happen to Mamo?") would have made the season more interesting.

Mamoru is still alive also in season 2, his conscience is alive, his subsoncient too. He is not dead.
In season 5, he dies completely, so everything from him disappears and nothing remains.
I don't see how, a subconscious mind can interact when the person is dead.

By cons it would have been fun to see the subconscious of Usagi act via the silver crystal and create a character who comes to his rescue.

As someone who loves both the Moonlight Knight and that 13-episode "filler" arc, I would have loved this. However, the Moonlight Knight existed because Mamoru didn't have his memories, so I don't know if he could sustain that specific form with his memories. As a workaround, one can imagine an explanation that he could develop that ability to call upon that ability at will, even when his body was reduced to a Star Seed. As mentioned, this would not only amp up the mystery, but it would also serve as a reminder that Usagi and Mamoru can be united in spirit even when their bodies are apart.

That being said, I've long had a suspicion about the Moonlight Knight. I can't help but think he was created in part, because Mamoru himself also wanted a normal-ish life and that falling for Usagi was essentially a gateway to the memories that were locked away. Given that in Classic, even before he had awakened and had his memories he was forcibly changing into Tuxedo Mask, it makes sense that there's not a repeat of that in the filler arc of R. Usagi wanted to be an ordinary girl again and that wish extended to her friends and Mamoru. This would also explain why Luna doesn't magically restore his memories beyond the fact that he's not a Sailor Soldier; Usagi wants Mamoru to choose to remember and choose her and even without his memories, he wants to do the same for her. However, given that the show never really delved into Mamoru's perspective in the filler arc, this is all baseless speculation.

As a tweak, what I'd like better if is if he could project himself as Tuxedo Mask. Why? Because then it would be a callback to the other part of R, where his consciousness as King Endymion was projecting himself when his body was in stasis. The Moonlight Knight fan in me wants the Moonlight Knight and counters that Tuxedo Mask is essentially the "Sailor form." and thus would be nonsensical to appear for that reason (none of the other victims could project their Sailor identities), but the more rational part of me knows that he should be Tuxedo Mask

Even though the anime pretty much gave up on adapting the anime after the masquerade episode for whatever reason they seemed intent on dropping a lot from the Doom Tree arc. Mercury is the only one to ever use her attack from those episodes ever again (which is ironic to me since she’s the only one where her Star power attack feels like an upgrade to her Doom Tree arc attack)

Moonlight Knight had a much cooler look and less embarrassing gimmick than Tux too. Shame the anime didn’t just drop Tuxie entirely for MK.

Anyways since Sailor Stars had Starfighter in the Tuxedo Mask role Moonlight Knight might have felt superfluous.
