I know in the 90s anime they seem to be completely human and I don't ever remember it being mentioned that they are aliens or even possessed by Daimons.
In the manga, I was always confused if they had ever been human, I seem to recall Kaolinite saying she created them from clay, but I can't find it now.
I do remember Tomoe claiming he made a perfect fusion between alien and human life and had them in a tank.
Was it only the revived Witches 5 who attack in the Mugen Academy who were clay or were they always golems?
Also, if they were originally humans, I suppose they were totally willing to become possessed and it is why they are perfect hosts for the Daimon.

I assumed they were humans in the 90s but created or vessels in Crystal and the Manga. Would have been interesting if Sailor Moon used her healing powers on them but they were probably acceptable hosts like Tomoe.

Kaolinite was the only who appears to be forced in my opinion, though it might also be possible Tomoe "forced" them to be hosts too by tricking them into thinking they would be his lab assistants and made them hosts instead.

Then again he could have also created them but if so, why stop with just the 5 of them? I'm sure he would have made more?

Considering we see what happens when those eggs hit civilians or animals and stuff, when Sailor Moon does her attack, the host is freed but that doesn't happen to Witches 5, Kaori, or the Mad Scientist, they get demolished..lol

Its interesting because the Un Nouveau Voyage (2015) musical (wow ... 2015?), musical, I had the impression that the Witches 5 were all humans who worked in Tomoe's lab before the lab blew up. My headcanon is that after Professor Tomoe made the deal with Pharaoh 90 the Witches 5 became hosts of Daimon Eggs like Kaoriknite because their bodies too were affected by the explosion. That's why the Witches Five can't be healed because their bodies were corrupted beyond repair.

I always assumed the Witches 5 were human in the anime. It seems like they had no superhuman abilities without their respectable tools.

I mean, Eudial dies in a car crash, of all things.

I think in the manga they were definitely science artificial humans. In Crystal their was a brief scene with them in tubes.

Flipping through the Eternal editions, it seems like they were human girls that underwent the full process of becoming hosts for the daimon eggs.
Professor Tomoe mentions to Kaolinite after she's lost the first few witches that she is wasting his eggs when she wastes her soldiers.

In Crystal, Mimete uses eggs to possess some students at her concert but in the manga, she asks Kaolinite for help and Kaolinite says it's a waste, but she has to rush the development of the eggs in the students and forces them to become monsters. Apparently, they've already implanted them in some students and are letting them be taken over slowly.

They also mention how disappointing it is that Haruka and Michiru left the school since they would have made perfect hosts.
Tomoe also says he managed to create some beautiful results when vesseling the eggs in specimens and it shows the Witches when he says this.
Whether this means they were human women or if he created artificial bodies isn't right out stated, but I'm assuming they really are students and teachers he experimented on.

It shows Hotaru in one of the test tubes like the Witches are in, in Crystal, so that also seems to point towards them being real, that and they do have human identities (eg Mimi Hanyu, Ruru Teruno)

I think the reason I believed they were clay is when Kaolinite summons them back again to attack the Senshi, they trap the Senshi in wax and when they are destroyed by Submarine Reflection, they melt into wax themselves along with fake versions of the inner Senshi who were also wax.
It was probably the Mixx translation that called it clay.

As for the '90s, I do think they are humans, and probably not possessed since we don't see anything like that out of them besides possibly Cryprine/Ptilol.
It makes me wonder what they were offered to do such horrible things.

In manga , they were created like the powerpuff girls , thats how i see it.

In the 90s anime , at the episode where Harumichi died , theres a line where Eudial says , if it werent by me they wouldnt have had got this job.

So i think that they were not related to the pharaoh 90 since the very begining in the 90s anime.
If you are working for someone , its because probably you are unafilliated with that person , so i think that the witches 5 were unafilliated to the prof tomote since the begining.

Another scenes , where Tomoe breaks the telephone , one of the witches said that he had to pay it , why would they ask him to pay that if they would have had been alies since they start?

So the witches 5 were just an individual organization that just happened to work to Tomoe.
Its never explaines how does Tomoe got to find them ,maybe Eudial approached to him first , based on her line , but it would be just a speculation.

Anyways , the curious thing is that some of them could use magic and some not.
Eudial , Tellu and Viluy only used technology.
But Mimete , Cyprine and her clone used magic.

Its never explained how did these last ones had the capabilty to use magic , but maybe the ep where kaolinite dies for the first time could have had gave us an answer, maybe.

Kaoilinte in dat episode injected herself a substance that gave her the powers of the daimon of that episode , so she could use the powers of the daimon with that simple injection , but those powers werent her , those powers were from the daimon.

So maybe mimete and cyprine , injected herself a substance that could give them powers just as kaolinite did , so they could have had been normal girls but with an inject substance that gave them powers , maybe if the injection can give the user the power of a daimon , then it could give an original power too.

the last parts would be jsut headcanons of mine.

They were all humans in the anime. Having magic powers in a magical girl show could be a thing for "normal" practitioners who gained the abilities.

I believe the little girl from the Haunted House episode in classic was just a regular human but she had powers. It's been a while since I've seen that episode.

I used to believe the higher the Witches 5 levels, the more skilled the witch she was, and her ability to perform magic or whatever.

On a related subject, does Kaolinite have a Daimon egg inside of her?

In the manga and the anime she is a normal person but then gets possessed?

Professor Tomoe gets possessed by Germatoid in the anime iirc, but not in the manga. I guess I'm asking if what goes for him also goes for Kaolinite.

If she isnt possessed, what are her motives for working for the Death Busters?

I'm pretty sure they were both infected and implanted with Daimon eggs. Kaori probably wasn't innocent though (in the manga) since she was taking part in Tomoe's unethical experiments.

What about the anime though?
In the anime it is never stated how she became a Death Buster, though I believe she was his assistant during that time.
I think it can be inferred that she has a similar backstory, even though she isn't shown in the flashback (nor is Hotaru's mother, Keiko who was killed in the explosion along with others). I don't believe it was ever mentioned if Kaolinite had a daimon egg implanted in her.
If anyone wants to see the scene, it's in this episode.

I dunno how similar the backstory can be because her role isn't exactly the same.

In the manga isn't she more equal in status to Professor Tomoe, whereas in the anime she is obviously his subordinate. Moreover, there is no romantic tension between them in the manga and the Witches 5 are not ostensibly vying for Kaolinite's position in Tomoe's good graces?

I felt bad for Kaori in the anime of Crystal. It's almost like she had no choice. This particular entity was more aggressive with its host selection instead of being simply persuasive and feeding off their jealousy or whatever.
