While I've long been aware of chika idols, I'm not as fluent about them as the mainstream ones, tho some of the latter are former chika ones.
I like their unique, traveling theme & it's a pity that they've now been "grounded" - we need more varieties in J-pop. *sigh*

They have been great and their theme was well thought of, but badly executed. Those uniforms sometimes
I also liked the different personalities of the members. Meeting them was always - interesting
But if you are looking for different musical directions, there are still some great groups out there. Although the best era in unique styles was probably 2010-2017.

I think the heydays of J-pop are around the two decades of 90s & 00s in general - not that it doesn't have some jewels nowadays, but overall it's running downhill in terms of both quality & overseas influence.
Oh, my bad. I was only referencing for Chika Idols with the dates. Popularity level of Passpo and lower, but with interesting concepts and ideas. I actually have no clue about major Idol groups or J-POP groups in general.
When it comes to non-idol music, I rather tend to favour chinese or taiwanese artists in the past.

Haha, I can well imagine! They came from a time in idol music when everything seemed to have been reinvigorated, I feel, and there were lots of good units—LiNQ, early BiS, 9nine, even AKB was still very new and exciting and dynamic. I'd been into idol groups for a very long time, but I think during this period I was my most dedicated, scouring through racks of sealed photographs in shops in Nakano Broadway, haha.

Ah, the good old days. Those names are so nostalgic. I preferred the TRIO shop above Akiba Cultures Theatre. They had a good T-shirt collection.
But as I now like less popular groups, I have not been in Akiba for years during my trips.

They were good times, for sure. I still go to Akiba fairly regularly, but it's more out of a sense of overall nostalgia than anything—and because of that nostalgia, it's really Nakano that gets me every time. I mean, I don't need to buy pictures of old idols and tokusatsu actors if I see them, and yet I always do, haha.
By the way, I love the Majisuka Gakuen series. Ever seen it? The actors have been major Idols. So at least there is that. 
(that's also why I like Mako in Sailor Moon lol ).Yeah, there was also a peak in idol music around the 80s, hence its revival in the 00s is feeling somewhat nostalgic. BTW, AKB48 can also be considered as a chika idol group during their early days, when there're as few as seven patrons seeing their performances at their exclusive theater in Akiba. lol Also, their producer is actually the same one of a famous idol group in the 80s.
