Besides Digimon and Dragon Ball, now LATAM Airlines closed a deal with Toei to broadcast Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon S episodes during flights, with both Latin Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs available. But why the S season? Probably because of the same reason they picked up S for the 2011 Brazilian DVD release: the Brazilian Classic and R dubs are lost. And Toei apparently is uninterested in redubbing them unless they close a TV deal. Last year, they announced Sailor Moon would be back on Brazilian television with a redub during the first trimester of 2019, but that didn't happen.
If I ever travel with LATAM, I'll probably stick to the Spanish dub because I can't stand that goddamned BR dub for R-Stars.

Too late for Naoko to pull that huh?

Good for Saint Seiya fans though, more proof of how popular that series is down there compared to everywhere else...and thankfully it's not Son Seiya (aka the trash Netflix reboot).

Slightly unrelated, but I'd be really cool if they do manage to secure a TV deal and re-released the old 90's merchandise like Italy started to do a few years ago. Brazilian fans wanted a redub too, right? It'd be a win-win situation. I know it's way more difficult to work out than I'm making it sound, but I can dream.

Yes, they do. But I don't think they would re-release merchandise, Sailor Moon was never much of a commercial success in Brazil. The manga sold REALLY well back in 2014 and they are releasing the Eternal Edition in both digital and physical forms, but they apparently never achieved the same success regarding the anime goods.

I'm just amazed the dubs for Classic and R are just gone. I see clips on YouTube so I have to assume television recordings exist at the very least. Unless this is like Doctor Who and not every episode is available online, couldn't efforts be made to work from television recordings to preserve Classic and R?

Every episode is available online, but the recordings have poor audio quality and it would be impossible to restore them properly. Even the S-Stars episodes Toei still has have bad audio quality and don't suit the HD video remasters, because Cloverway hired a cheap studio to dub them back in the 2000s. So a redub is necessary if the series is ever back on TV or put on streaming.
