How about not being jerks to the people working tirelessly to bring us FREE entertainment?

I hope I am not being intrusive or rude, but it is not "free."

They make us watch ads, buy subscriptions, merchandise, and a variety of things.

On a different note, this thread *isn't* about disliking the new anime series. As someone pointed out, you can appreciate the product they're selling while also being able to critique it.

It depends on what your definition of "free" is. I haven't spent a single cent on Sailor Moon Crystal, so I consider that to be free.

I've not been forced to buy merchandise or any subscriptions as of yet. Yes, I have to watch ads, but I'm not losing money by doing so.

But in watching ads, you're generating revenue for TOEI animation and all of its affiliated parties.

TOEI wouldn't give you a product for free, and the minimum they request from you is that you watch ads while streaming their anime (which I believe is fair enough).

If the executives thought they would be unable to make a profit, there would be no anime.

Watching ads may be the price I pay for watching SMC, but it is not a monetary price. I have not financially contributed to SMC, therefore I consider the product I'm getting free.

Toei is a business, of course they wouldn't green light a series if there was no potential for a profitable turnover. They receive financial backing from sponsors and stakeholders, hence why there are ads. However, SMC is not being withheld from me, as a viewer, for not reaching into my wallet and purchasing any of their (Toei and affiliates) products.

The ads are on Hulu mostly (and maybe Crunchyroll? I don't remember). The money they gather prolly goes to the website in question and not Toei cause that's just their practice with the ads - on all shows and videos. No ads on NicoNico international - and that's the main site for international viewers.

Re: Are you disappointed with the designs/animation of Crystal?

Well yeah because it's not Toei who's responsible for the ads, so I doubt they get much profit even from those. Or maybe they have a contract with these American sites who officially host SMC, where they get the revenue from Crystal. Goodness knows, really. But in any case, it doesn't look like the studio gets profit directly from us, the viewers. We get the chance to watch the anime legally and for free. They'll get profit from the DVDs and BluRays and from the merchandise. But even so, this doesn't seem like a very high budget project, so they may cover their losses without any problems.

Spreading the 26 episodes over one year can also reduce the cost per unit of time. :)

Re: Are you disappointed with the designs/animation of Crystal?

i'm grateful for what we're getting, a lot of it has been done very well and i'm very excited about what's to come. but not having high expectations for something that's as big as it is, and that was treated so ridiculously for so long, is kind of impossible ^_^' besides, as my dad would say "that's how you know you love it-- you get so involved that you question EVERYTHING about it and pull it apart.. but you'll still sit and watch it over and over."

I haven't spent a single penny so far. It IS free, and watching an ad is not paying for something. And no can make you buy merchandise. That's money you CHOOSE to spend. In any case, there is a big difference between critiquing something, and looking through every frikkin' frame for mistakes, a pointless wasted activity I've been seeing WAY too much of lately.

I am NOT saying you have to like it. I am not telling you you have to like it. I am not telling you to have a specific opinion. I am stating why I think your opinion is biased and inflexible. You aren't giving this series the benefit of the doubt. You have only seen 2 damned episodes. I suggest you watch the entire thing BEFORE you rip out the torches and pitchforks. Who knows? Your mind could change; but if your standards are so impossibly high, then it is completely unlikely this will happen.

Just...gah. Done. I'm done with whiners like this
Seriously your habit of blindly overreacting to the fact that other people view the presenation of this new series differently from yourself is really starting to get on my nerves. It's not an argument. I agree that the nitpicks shouldn't stop people from supporting it because it is still watchable. However, Love it or hate it, the fact that the animation looks cheap in a lot of areas. You can make excuses for it, but the cringeworthy unecessary flaws will still be there. Look at it from a non-fan's perspective. It shows Toei is unfortunately cutting corners with it or treating it as a side project for generic pump-outs rather than a priority one they way they handle Precure and DBZ. Some people feel weary of that affecting the quality of it overall. Scenes like the ones featured will not age well. It also seems unfair that the series is being handled so poorly compared to legitimently bad shows getting better treatment. I can see the disappointment in people when you compare more newer anime that is generally percieved as terrible like Oreimo and Haganai getting better treatment than a classic icon such as this.

Its only because I'm a fan I'll support it regardless but to be honest and unbias, the animation really looks like [BLEEP]. You cant really argue the older animation had its flaws as if it shouldnt have them, they were all hand drawn, which alone leaves room for what you would expect to be flawed but it ironically wasn't if not very consistent with its presentation unlike Crystal where it should have no excuse.

I really wish Toei wasn't in charge of this because we have all seen better, and thus why the people complaining think it deserves better. Its spoiling the hype for what it was overestimated to be. The bad CGI, the jerky movements, the inconsistent facial expressions the weird proportions on the models etc. If this series cant at most visually blow away the 90s show it leaves people to question 'why shouldnt they go back?' animation wise the original show from the 3rd season onward looked amazing and still looks good to this day. It shouldn't be like that. Older animation shouldnt look better than the newer stuff but with how horrible the new DBZ stuff looks it seems like Toei is regressing. Thats all thats being said here.

EDITED:

I edited the title of the thread and poll to reflect the animation only.

The character designs are beautiful and a remarkable adaptation of Takeuchi's work.

When I used the term "design" in the title, I actually meant to describe how characters are drawn in *specific* scenes of the anime, particularly episode 2.

That's not because of character design, but time issue.

Why do we have to worry about those scenes, because it will be fixed before releasing DVDs and blu-ray discs.

You do realize that the latest Precure is rife with animation problems and is off-model in a lot of episodes? It's also quite laughable to call DBZ a top priority for Toei when Kai was basically just a lazy remastering of the series... Which, by the way, completely flopped. I can understand Toei being cautious with a new Sailor Moon anime, in that respect. No mater how much the merch sells, there is no guarantee that a new Sailor Moon anime would be successful, no matter how 'iconic' it is.

Some people feel weary of that affecting the quality of it overall. Scenes like the ones featured will not age well. I can see the disappointment in people when you compare more newer anime that is generally percieved as terrible like Oreimo and Haganai getting better treatment than a classic icon such as this.
That's because Haganai and Oreimo are the type of anime that sells. High fan-service, harem based comedy that is driven by the pockets of nerdy shut-in males in Japan ('Otaku'). You might think that kind of anime is terrible next to Sailor Moon, and I'd agree, but those kind of anime have a guarantee that they'll be successful. On the other hand, the last few times Sailor Moon was on the air, it didn't do so well. Ratings plummeted for SuperS and Sailor Stars, and the Tokusatsu also effectively flopped. This is probably why Toei went with an internet broadcast, which means a smaller budget.

It's fine if you don't like the animation, but if you think that it would have been any different if another network picked up Sailor Moon Crystal, then you're wrong. Most shoujo anime do not have the budgets you are dreaming of because, again, the majority of the anime industry panders towards the Otaku male. If you're going to blame anything, blame the way the anime industry works because it pretty much exclusively caters to men. That's why you'll see jiggling breasts in almost every other anime.

Honestly though, I think the animation is fine. It's not perfect, but considering the circumstances it's met my expectations. Just because it's digital animation doesn't mean it's a breeze to do, and I wonder if the people who are even saying that have done any animation in the past to be able to comment.

I would say studio, and not network.

I think that if a studio like "Madhouse" got the rights to do "Sailor Moon," they would do a remarkable job.

"Madhouse" did a shojo anime, "Kobato," in 2009, allegedly on a tight budget, and the animation was just perfect.

I am mentioning "Kobato" (2009) only because it was the most recent shojo anime I have seen other than "Sailor Moon Crystal" (2014). I don't view "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" (2011) as shojo.

--

I maintain my opinion that the first episode of "Sailor Moon Crystal" was beautifully animated, and I hope that the upcoming episodes will have the same quality as the first episode.

Of course, as someone who appreciates this series and is grateful that we have it, I will continue watching and enjoying it.

Sorry I meant to say studio. It's early morning.

Edit: I just watched a few clips from Kobuto, and while the art is gorgeous, the framerate seems pretty low and the movement isn't as smooth. It's also not as action-packed as Sailor Moon, at least from what I briefly saw... Sailor Moon has things like attacks, transformations and action sequences that need to be animated and probably take a considerable amount of the budget to do.

Also I'm pretty sure that Madhouse produced the X anime. I'm a huge fan of the manga, but if people thought that Sailor Moon Crystal animation is jerky and awkward, they really need to watch the anime adaption of X. So yeah, I'm going to stand by my original statement.

In other words, blame the society in which the industry operates. lol
