I had skipped every ending after Heart Moving my first watch through. Largely due to impatience. but on rewatch I had made sure to listen through them for about every episode. I think they're really good at setting a tone for the season. I wish Watashitachi ni Naritakute lasted through the entire Amazon trio arc I would've loved to hear that the episode they died.
They should have made an ending song specific to the Neherenia arc.

This is so out of place.... Naoko-sama do you feel alright?
It doesn't serve any purpose except as always for shock value and to 'look cool and edgy'.
If you read or watched it, boy do I hope you had this same energy towards Natsuki Takaya during the whole Ren-Akira-Akito mother/father/daughter love triangle in Fruits Basket

Hope you had the same energy towards the mangaka of Usagi Drop after hearing about it’s infamous ending.

Look I hate it too but let’s not act like the sexualization of the father/daughter relationship isn’t an ubiquitous thing within the anime and manga industries and this is something unique only to Naoko.

Once she meets Usagi, she discovers that this girl who looks like her and her mother has every thing she ever wished for - freedom, an everyday simple life, close friends, a lover and it's where her envy starts taking root.
Ultimately Chibi-Usa gets close with Usagi and via Mamoru, she gets the 'male attention' she's always wanted.
And once all hell starts breaking loose, this envy of hers towards Usagi turns into jealousy and hatred and she adopts her femme fatale personality (Black Lady is pretty much Chibi-Usa rebellious phase lol).
That was the dynamic Naoko was attempting to portray with Chibi-Usa’s heel face turn. The only abrupt/out of nowhere part is her turning Mamoru into her love slave when it really should’ve been Pluto since she was the one who triggered Chibi-Usa’s insecurities and jealousies that she’s only loved for her who her parents are and is simply her mother’s mere shadow.

Should I just go ahead and do the other seasons or wait till their respective arcs come up?
Please do! :)

Act 21
  • Each episode starting with previous episode recap is boring but considering we had one episode each 2 weeks, it was necessary I guess. Still a good way to not have too many thing new to animate hehe
  • So this is one of the episode which is somewhat nicely animated. We will talk later about this but long hair flowing everywhere doesn’t mean good animation and can’t mask poor art
  • By the way I don’t really like these normal Crystal Tokyo shots with greens and supposedly futuristic buildings, seem cheap.
  • I suppose using these manga panels with art nouveau style could be okay but it's not really beautiful here. Even closed, eyes seem off... Just changing the eyes might be okay.
  • Yup inconsistency with previous episode where Kikg Endy said that he was around NQS with inners when NQS was turned in Crystal (aka with Diamand).
  • This sums up several thing I dislike in this design: little mouth "en cul de poule" as we say in french, and I really dislike these soft brush they use to draw shadows. I suppose they want to recreate a soft and watercolor-y atmosphere but it's just seemed to be blurred everywhere

When you feel alone, just say AVADA KEDAVRA ! ». Oops no wrong spell, but pronunciation is close
  • Chibiusa being jealous because Pluto talks to someone else. Honestly she would change best friend / love interest in each season (first Pluto, then her father in the past, then Hotaru, then Pegasus, then her Sailor Quartet). Boriiiiiing
He kinda look like Petz in this shot :P

This is so out of place.... Naoko-sama do you feel alright?
It doesn't serve any purpose except as always for shock value and to 'look cool and edgy'.

A good writer could have played this dynamic very well by showing how Chibi-Usa longed for the love of her father (considering Chibi-Usa's mental state for 900 years, the royal duo were crappy parents), how she was always lonely and drowning in her royal responsibilities.
Once she meets Usagi, she discovers that this girl who looks like her and her mother has every thing she ever wished for - freedom, an everyday simple life, close friends, a lover and it's where her envy starts taking root.

But it's Takeuchi, so it's bland and senseless as hell...

Considering 90% of Sailor Moon stems from Takeuchi's personal life, I don't wanna delve into this...
But seriously now she wants her father's TOO???
It's official, Crystal 2 was a hentai without the X-rated parts lol
Again is this in the manga? If yes, I'm sure there's some Black Lady/Mamoru/King Endymion doujinshi out there...

I have no idea what happened to Takahashi during Sailor Moon. His profile shots are very good in Precure (esp. Doki Doki).
His profile shots tend to have this old-school shounen anime vibe to them like what Umakoshi or Ichikawa did on Saint Seiya Omega but Takahashi's profile shots in Crystal are disastrous.

I still prefer OG Pluto's voice. Crystal Pluto is very good, there's just not this mysterious vibe in her voice compared to the 90s.
HaruMichi and Hotaru's voices are perfect and I didn't have much problem with Kotono except on Eternal where her age really starts to show - there's some early Nozawa's Goku syndromes there.
As for Ami, I don't mind her much - her seiyuu is good but it's just that there's not much stuff she does in Crystal for you to remember her performance. Her voice is kinda meh however compared to Hisakawa's whose was this perfect crystal clear but soft spoken voice.
However I ADORE Shizuka Ito's Minako! I was already a big fan of hers from Lenalee of D.Gray-Man but she does a fabulous job on Minako. It's very different from Fukami's but still very 'Minako'.

As for Rei or Makoto, I do not like them at all...
Rina Sato is a very capable seiyuu but it feels like 90% of the time she has no idea how to play Rei - is she gonna be fiery? Is she gonna be an ice-cold princess? Is she gonna be a tsundere? Nobody knows, not even Takeuchi lol :P
Makoto is a complete waste with this tomoyish voice and direction they gave her seiyuu. Shinohara played her perfectly as the older sister type of character with the deep yet feminine voice but I really can't with Crystal Makoto.

This is irrelevant because here:
1) We are talking about Chibi-Usa's own, corrupted yes but non-brainwashed, actions not those of Death Phantom.
2) No way at that time Takeuchi thought about Chaos and it's implementation in her work. Chaos is a last addition to her story not something that she was laying the groundwork for since the 2nd arc.

Chaos and Galaxia are planned to be one and the same when Takeuchi originally planned the Stars Arc.

Death Phantom is one of the many incarnations of Chaos—Chaos ultimately wants to make Sailor Moon snap, lose control and succumb to anger and despair.
As Talentless Fool said, it can't be a valid explanation because the ending wasn't planned at this time. At this point, would Miss Haruna, harassing usagi to do her homeworks, be an agent of Chaos too ? :googly:

He kinda look like Petz in this shot :P

The way you are describing her mental state and evolution make so much more sense that the was it's described in the manga or Crystal ! This could have been so interesting and they could have corrected this in Crystal if they had real writers. They have no excuse because the whole manga is finished and they can totally see what were the full author's intentions on the long time. But the problem here is that Takeuchi didn't really have a clear vision and, to her defense, she didn't have that much time to deepen her stories...But why would she open so many loose stories and characters that would a no real significance, untill the very end of her story ? I don't understand.

Yup just checked and there is a panel with Black Lady approaching her hand to her father's cheek..
What would people say if the manga author was a male ? People would call the author sick and with weird fantasies, but nobody say anything there ??

I think my problem with Pluto's old voice is that I can't hear anything else than Miss Haruna ^^By the way I seem to recall that in the first season, we would oftenly see Shingo and Haruna in the same episode, probably because they were voiced by the same person ?
Same with episode 110, Shingo appearing in Usagi's room make no sense but I suppose it was a nod to the fact that the VA was also playing Pluto and this would be her come back episode.

And yet it was also said in arc 1. Queen Serenity which speaks of Queen Metalia as pure evil (implying the source of evil).
Queen Nehellenia, again, even there it says the incarnation of evil. It is especially in arc 4, that she refocused her story on Chaos, with the speech of Nehellenia (Chaos), about where the origin of life comes from, and that she speaks from the depths (come) of the galaxy.

That's the one valid point I give her.
Takeuchi is always complaining about changes in the 90s anime and how she's shocked, how she's overworked, how the color design choices she made were rejected, how her heart was broken by everything etc. but she never mentions that she would have wanted additional time to deepen her stories. (perhaps because she had no further ideas?)

The choices imposed by Bandai and Toei were for the toys only and possibly for the Senshi having a new form each season to sell dolls and nothing else within the story itself. And yet, we can see from one point onwards, Takeuchi wasn't imposed by them either as the Outers' Lip Rods or Inners' Crystal Wands never existed in the manga.

Kondasha must have made her know that each arc was gonna run for approximately 1 year and that she should base her story around this length - 12-13 chapters.
In fact, she worked close with Kondasha's staff on Dark Kingdom and that's why the pace is the best in that arc.
So why would she introduce a plethora of characters each arc (Witches 5, Amazon groups, Animamates) who barely last a few pages draining the already limited no of pages she's granted instead on focusing on her story and already established characters?
She isn't someone like Kubo who introduces a whole army of stylish characters because he intends to make each of them fight.

Like Lady Pen said, the Amazoness Quartet - lacking a personality - could have been a single character. In Dream, Zirconia, the Amazon Trio and Amazoness Quartet fundamentally don't serve any purpose except for the Inners' filler time so she could have simply introduced Nehenelia in the shadows and 3 main antagonists - an Amazoness Quartet kid (focusing on the Royal trio mainly Chibi-Usa), one younger male targeting the Inners and an older character targeting the Outers.
By this schema, the antagonists would have had more to do in the overall story, have more screen-time and she could have kept them relevant till the Senshi's invasion of the Circus instead we get... 10 useless antagonists.

The whole problem of the Sailor Moon manga is it's very repetitive schema - each chapter focuses on a Senshi/her counterpart and no overlapping elements and then everything is a rush to the finish line for the second half of the arc.

Like you said, the manga is already finished, they could have developed and fleshed out a lot of things to make things make sense and interesting.
They could even have made allusions to Chaos masterminding everything by having the cats or Minako noticing strange fluctuations of the same kind of energy nearly every time they come across the big boss but no... everything has to be like in the manga.

Takeuchi could have asked for more pages per chapter during the original run considering Sailor Moon was a major hit, she likewise didn't have to put repetitive filler chapters on the first half of each arc - do, for example the Inners' individual Dream chapters serve a purpose considering in the next arc, they completely forget about their dreams?
But I doubt Takeuchi sees these as faults.
All other mangakas who were given the chance to work on a modern adaptation of their work have provided assistance in a number of ways such as helping in polishing the scenario, fleshing out routes they couldn't have done back in the day, provide promotional art etc... but Takeuchi prefers to only sit and have the final say.

And no I don't think she is Toei's scapegoat, considering she is basically being a bully to foreign publishers over colors and imposing honorifics while having no knowledge of said country's culture - I doubt behind the scenes she is actually being bullied by big bad Toei.
Which is such an irony because the French version of Eternal has loads of errors everywhere! (I wonder if it's the case for the other dubs too.)

The attitude of Takeuchi towards the companies she works with explains why Takeuchi is treated like crap by Bandai and none of her other works get adapted into anime while CLAMP gets everything in the 90s, CLAMP even had their unfinished manga Clamp Campus Detectives adapted into anime which is well fleshed out compared to the source material which was sponsored by Bandai, basically she deserves what happened to her and she did not learn from that.

Interesting thing is Sera Myu kinda does that. In "Yume Senshi - Ai - Eien ni" They have Nehelenia/Zirconia control Hotaru so they can get her to hate dreams like the AQ [they basically do whatever they want in those]

I was under the impression the Amazon Quartet was there so Chibiusa would have a team of her own in the future paralleling Usagi and the Inners [Plus Helios as her boyfriend paralleling UsaMamo]

She wanted to be like mommy in the future. Well, it's her lucky day, she gets to be like mommy in the future.

[:chibiusa::redghost::blueghost::pinkghost::greenghost: / :usagi::rei::ami::minako::mako:]

She even gets a guy w/ a white horse. Even the 90s anime acknowledged no being alive can resist the allure of a man on a white horse.

I suppose they renewed contracts year by year since they didn't think the series would have great success on the long term ? But yeah she should have never accepted to be trapped in that one year / one arc thing because it led her to burnout and resentment against the whole industry lol

So why would she introduce a plethora of characters each arc (Witches 5, Amazon groups, Animamates) who barely last a few pages draining the already limited no of pages she's granted instead on focusing on her story and already established characters?

It would he been way better the way you describe it.
Eternal movie kinda made me like the Quartet more though, since they had some nice animation moments, and the scene where they appear transformed is actually a little pretty? But they have zero personality: the girlish one, the boyish one, the childish one, and the brutal one. That's all, no more concept.

Like you said, the manga is already finished, they could have developed and fleshed out a lot of things to make things make sense and interesting.

Again it's such a good idea ! The human Luna cameo at the end of S1 made me hope they would do this kind of thing but I suppose the shitstorm they got with the Shitenno changes afraid them to do more edition (or Takeuchi asked to stop to enhances her already perfect work hehe).

And no I don't think she is Toei's scapegoat, considering she is basically being a bully to foreign publishers over colors and imposing honorifics while having no knowledge of said country's culture - I doubt behind the scenes she is actually being bullied by big bad Toei.

I'm happy that you talk about the french version because I watched some parts of Eternal movies in french recently and I saw some weird mistakes (Chibi Moon saying "Carillon de cristal action" in order to transform in the last battle scene is one of them). When I will reach the Eternal part, I plan to look at the movie in full french so I can talk about this, it somewhat gives the feeling to look at something new ^^; Another think that I will talk about later is that when you listen to the dialogues, straightly taken from the manga, in your mothertongue, it's just... really different, it sound ridiculous sometimes because you can tell it was not done to be listened but read. And it's harder to notice if you listen in another language than yours I believe.

This is also what I think. There is clearly a business problem with Takeuchi and there is a reason why she is treated like this and this reboot took so many time to finish. I'm not here to demonize her or anything but this whole franchise has the scent of drama everywhere, and it was already something on the 90's era.

By the way I'm sorry for hijacking your thread T_T I'm trying to look at the series as if it was the first time for me too in order to stay in the subject, I hope I can have unbiased opinion too but it's not easy :chibichibi:

Actually, Naoko didn't complain so much about the 90's show. It's the english-speaking part of the fandom that has been spreading those rumours over the years. In her recent interviews she has criticised a lot the manga and how ugly it is and she's very surprised people still loves it. She's aware that the Sailor Moon manga hasn't got the artistic level of the 70's shoujo, that she can't draw and also that she constantly abused screentones and GC.

The thing is, if she thinks her manga is trash, why hasn't she redrawn most of it and included more panels and pages in the last 15 years? :ninja: She's lazy.

[Sailor Moon S]

original overview
Spoiler: show
Sailor Moon S
  • Favorite Season of the 90s Anime
  • Once I started the first episode I was already hooked. I loved Haruka and Michiru's introduction episode. Plus, I liked each character's "heart crystal episode".
  • I liked the clashing of ideologies between the Inners' "Idealism" and the Outers' .... "Not idealism".
  • I thought it was interesting how the Death Busters and their Daimons had ways of matching or even outclassing Sailor Moon's attacks. :usagi::cthulhu::zoid:
  • Everything about HaruMichi. Their backstory & their dynamic. There was something about Neptune calling out to her lover. Helplessly enduring the arrows, doing whatever she could to make sure she's alive that always gets me. :haruka:::love:::mihiru:
  • Speaking of which: Neptune:mihiru:!
  • Although I hear essays about how terrible UsaMamo was here, I personally liked some of the moments between in this season. [not the slapping part tho] :usagi:::tuxspeedmask:
  • Plus, I thought Mamoru's incorporation/interactions with the cast were fine.
  • I'm also fond the sense of humor here. :googly: [although that "kid's elephant" bit was ... strange to say the least]
  • I hear the pacing got kind of off near the end. For me, I thought the way they laid out the events were fine pacing wise.

  • I also thought it was strange to hear the second to last episode was "pointless filler". So..
  • What happened to Hotaru and why she's a baby? :hotaru:
  • Where Harumichi went after the battle? :haruka::mihiru:
  • What happened to Professor Tomoe?
  • What happened to Pluto after the explosion? :setsuna:

  • I also hear Uranus and Neptune were trying to kill SM. I thought they just wanted her to take a stand and show them who's boss like a queen's supposed to do. I completely understand someone calling it "STUPID" but pointless filler:?
  • I'm not saying it's a its some flawless masterpiece undeserving of criticism. That's just honestly how my experience was with it.

Ok so I'm just gonna completely steal from someone else's review since I think they put my feelings of the season into better words. Just fill in many of the spots w/ "In my opinion" and "For me"s since Its usually hard for me to be COMPLETELY certain about something. I'll also add emojis since that's what I do. For some reason "spoilers" seems to split apart the first paragraph from the rest.

Spoiler: show

"filled with charming, silly character episodes and riveting, action-packed plot lines alike. I’m not sure the story always made sense, but it made up for it by getting me to care about what happened to pretty much everyone."

"Hotaru and Professor Dad formed the emotional core of the season, as their complicated (split) personalities and tragic shared history were gradually revealed over a series of episodes, building them up into people I both (1) really wanted to get a happy ending, and (2) honestly didn’t know if they would. S played with expectations better than the other two seasons did, making the finale legitimately tense."
Spoiler: show

"Hotaru and her father are never going to completely get back what they lost, nor is Chibiusa (or Usagi or Pluto, for that matter). Sailor Moon carried the weight of its apocalyptic story line well, and we felt those repercussions even into our overall pleasant final episode." [:hotaru:]

"...being honest, I’m not sure how much I like HaruMi at this point, but there’s no denying they’re good characters: complex, flawed, and frequently conflicted, with strong ideals and a willingness to act on them." [:haruka::mihiru:]

"...Chibiusa went from being a long series of groans to a solid—even enjoyable!—member of the cast." [:chibiusa:]

...Mamoru, a guy who never quite fit with the rest of the cast and whose “romance” with Usagi was fraught with kidnappings, brainwashings, unconscious make-out sessions, and nonsensical breakup plots. Much like the scouts, his role was pretty significantly reduced this season, but when he did show up he integrated well with the other girls (especially Ami—BroTP 5eva!) and was both a supportive boyfriend to Usagi and an understanding father-figure for Chibiusa." [::tuxspeedmask:]

Anyways

  • When I first got to S there was such massive a burst of energy. The only thing I've heard beforehand was the season was the darkest. and with the first episode I was hooked immediately. Adding to that was the music, "Moon Cosmic Power Make Up" was an immediate favorite. I remember thinking world shaking and deep submerge were one of the most intense attacks I've seen.
  • I really appreciated HaruMichi's addition to the cast. As what I said in Classic, I like seeing characters have to deal with new recurring members then having to eventually settle on what their opinion are & how their dynamics will work. And in this case the new character will also help the cast realize things about themselves.
  • As mentioned before
  • I thought Mimete was a foil to Usagi especially w/ the whole crybaby who avoids her responsibilities thing. [plus, there was a preview directly referencing Usagi's beginning speech, unless that was a Viz dub only thing]
  • The thought of being stuck in a computer forever terrifies me. [same for Jadeite "eternal sleep"] I hope that computer was destroyed and burned if you can at least die.
  • Tomoe was a fun villain. I did kinda wish Kaolinite would've survived.
  • I also think this season has some of the best coloring for night/dark room scenes. especially the cathedral scene
  • The fight between Uranus and Neptune against Germitoid could've easily been turned into R34
  • Personally I felt satisfied with the finale. All of the conflicts went on long enough for me to be happy with how it turned out.
  • Next I'll go a bit more in depth about how I feel about SuperS.
  • Oh boy.

SuperS was pretty dark too. It suffers the same fate of Yugioh Vrains when it was about to finish. Both ended up with wasted potential.

Spoiler: show

It feels like Ikuhara was rushing to finish this season once the Amazoness Quartet arrived.

The crystal forest of Elysion was really cool then you get to see the real Elysion which looks like earth with Greek/Roman temples. There was probably a lot of re-writing towards the latter half of SuperS.

Shame really. They sold us this image even in the opening but it was wasted.
